Sir George Grey has sent the following touching telegram in reply to the message sending tlie public meeting resolutions : —" Thank you for your telegram. We are doing our utmost to gain mere justice for the people of Auckland and the country we love.—G. Gbby." (peb pbess agenct.) Auckland, Monday. The Zealandi* sailed South last night. Another case of scarlatina having been discovered on the quarantine ground has rendered the further detention of the Bebington immigrants necessary. They are becoming very insubordinate. Mr. and Mrs. Hall announce their appearance in Auckland shortly, with Pratt the pianist. The opera company opens the new Theatre Royal to-night. Napier, Monday. The De Murska concert is a brilliant success. There is a full house. De Murskaand the other performers are in splendid voice. The creditors of Kentish McLean agreed at a meeting to-day to accept, the offer previously made—ss. in the £. Mr. Ormond, M.H.R., leaves for Wellington per Zealandia to-morrow morning. Greymobth, Monday.
An extraordinary meeting of the shareholders of the Grey Kiver Steam Tug Company was held to-day, at which the directors were empowered to sell the tug Despatch to the best advantage. It is anticipated that a new company will be formed in Greymouth to purchase her. The I?istricfc Court has been occupied all last week in the trial of Ah Wong for carnally abusing and for indecent assault on a child nine years of age. The first trial lasted two days, and then the jury were locked up all night, but could not agree. The second trial commenced on Thursday morning, and lasted till this morning, Vie jury having been locked up since Saturda.^ - _»L'fenioon ; but again they did not agree. The Crown Prosecutor applied that the next trial should take place at Hokitika, which was agreed to. Hokitika, Monday. At the election for Mayor to-day for the remainder of the municipal year the following: was the result: —Jack, 220; Lazar, 208. The body of Harris, the Okarito mailman, was found yesterday at the Saltwater Creek A fire occurred at Ross yesterday morning, destroying Mcße'ath's - drapery store and McLean's tobacconist's shop. Mcßeath was not insured, and his loss is between £2OOO and £3OOO. McLean is insured for £2OO.
Dunkdin, Monday. A presentation of plate has been made to the Hon. W. H. Keynolds to-day. In the course of reply he stated he was in favor of only two provinces for the colony, which declaration was received with cheeis.
CmnsTCHtrECH, Monday. At a meeting of the Press Club on Saturday Judge Johnston was elected president. At a meeting of the Certificated Teacher's Association a resolution wa3carried tothe effect that examinations for teachers and children throughout the colon? should be uniform.
