Some time since we created contradictions from Messrs. Stout and Sheehan by venturing to assert that those gentlemen had been " evoking a spontaneous" exhibition of public feeling by sending telegrams to Otago and Auckland commanding the same. We presume that what we are about to state will also create a contradiction by somebody, but nevertheless we state it. One of the Maori members, who it is known supports the Government, was waited on by a political aide-de-camp of Sir George Grey, who asked him to send telegrams to his district, ordering his constituents to get up meetings in favor of separation. The Maori member replied that he would send no telegrams, but that were he doing so he would be inclined to send them of a very different character to that asked for. Thereupon the aide-de-camp threatened that " they" would send telegrams to the Maori member's constituents, telling them to get up a want of confidence meeting towards their representative. To this the Maori member replied more forcibly than politely, by telling the aide-do-camp to go to a place of which the last act of "Don Giovanni-' affords mortals a transient peep. In addition to this, we may mention that when replying on his separation resolutions Sir George Grey will read a sheaf of telegrams from " in6uential" Maoris, all expressing abhorrence of Sir Donald McLean and his native policy. This is all vastly praiseworthy and pleasing.
