Through his dam, he is directly related to some of the best racehorses ever in New Zealand, viz., Wetsail, the best mare of her day ; Stormbird, winner of the Canterbury Cupof 1000 sovs. ; Belle of the Isle (own sister to Southern Chief), winner of the Canterbury Gup of 1000 sovs., and dam of the renowned Templeton. Southern Chief has now been at the Stud four seasons, the whole time in the Wairarapa, where his stock are very much admired and command high prices, being substantial and handsome.
