The petition for the release of W. P. Townsend, who was committed to prison at the last session of the Supreme Court for manslaughter in midwifery, has been signed by five thousand people, and will be forwarded to W. S. Moorehouse, M.H.R. to-day. The Acclimatisation Society have obtained 20,000 trout ova,- by artificial means, for hatching. Mr. Griffiths being about to leave the colony, offers the whole of his extensive racing stud for sale.

Serious burglaries have been committed by Edward Butler, alias Donnelly, who has been arrested.
The Mayor’s salary is fixed at £4OO. The Dunedin Eire Brigade will challenge the Wellington men to contest for the Ballarat cup.
A public meeting re Co-operative Society, in course of formation, was held last night. Shares are going off briskly.
