A public meeting will be held this evening to receive the report of the committee appointed at the first meeting in connection with a memorial to the late Dr. Featherston. In reference to this matter a correspondent who has written to us seems to assume that the decision the committee have arrived at as regards the proposed memorial is an unalterable one. He is quite, mistaken. The committee have acted very sensibly. Two propositions were before them for perpetuating the memory of Dr. Fbatherston. One was to found a charitable institution of some sort; the other to erect a monument or statue or bust. Considerable doubt was expressed as to whether sufficient money could be obtained for oarying out the first object, so the committee wisely determined on at least recommending the other, in any event it being left dependable on the. amount received forsubscriptiona whether, after providingabust, something might not be obtained towards founding a charitable institution. Objection too has been taken to the limit proposed to be fixed to the amount of each individual subscription; but it must be remembered that it will be quite within the province of to-night’s meeting to review this as well as other propositions of the committee, and to dissent therefrom or agree therewith as may seem fitting.
