(PEH PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Saturday. The Kapauga Company, Coromandel, are driving on splendid golden stone. A. Messenger, a Queen-street fruiterer, has been brought up on two charges of evading the Customs regulations, and making a false declaration relative to the contents of a bale of paper bags landed from the steamer Hero. The case has been remanded. The schooner Sea Rip has been chartered in Lyttelton to go to the Chatham Islands with a cargo of stores and ascertain the whereabouts of the missing schooner Agnes. New Plymouth, Saturday. Mr. E. M. Smith leaves here by steamer for Wellington, to Interview shareholders relative to being allowed to have a trial at smelting the iron sand. The shareholders here have met and passed a resolution strongly recommending the shareholders in Wellington to assist Smith in obtaining an opportunity of using the company's furnace and material for the purpose of testing the question of the practicability of smelting the iron sand.
Taukanga, Saturday. The Wairoa native meeting is over. It was almost unanimously decided to open the Kaimai country for gold prospecting. Parties will start out in a few days. The Bay of Plenty Times announces that a large native meeting will be held next week at Ohinemutu, regarding the lease of the Koro ICoro country or the selling of it to the Government. £2OO was realised at a church bazaar these last two days. Westport, Saturday. The first train for passengers and goods traffic ran to-day on the Mount Rochfort line. For the present month four trains per week will run. Ddnedin, Saturday. The verdict in Roberts' case was " Poisoned while temporarily insane." The Chess Club held its annual dinner last night. ■
