He has been a good performer, having won nine races, at all distances, with heavy weights, beating such celebrated horses as Tambourini, Burgundy, Yatterina, Misfortune, and Hatred. Through hi 3 dam, he is directly related to some of the best racehorses ever in New Zealand, viz., Wetsail, the best mare of her day ; Stormbird, winner of the Canterbury Cup of 1000 so vs. ; Belle of the Isle (own sister to Southern Chief), winner of the Canterbury Cup of 1000 sovs., and dam of the renowned Templeton. Southern Chief has now been at the Stud four seasons, the whole time in the Wairarapa, where his stock are very much admired and command high prices, being substantial and handsome.
