Captain Chapman, of the Wollomai, reports being in company with two brigs, one the Spray, bound to Lyttelton, on Thursday; and the other yesterday, but the latter was too far off to make her name out. . The schooner Elibank Castle, bound from Oamaru to Hokitika with produce, ran.in hero yesterday. It appears that the schooner left Oamaru on Tuesday last, and experienced moderate S,W. weather up the coast. When off Terawiti two of the crew refused to work, on the ground that Captain Neill, the master, did not hold a master's certificate. Captain Neill therefore ran into this port, where he sent the two refractory gentlemen ashore. 4 . „ Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co.'s fine chartered brigantine Wollomai, Captain Chapman, arrived here yesterday evening from Melbourne with a full cargo of general merchandise. She left Port Phillip Heads on July 13 ; experienced easterly and N.E. winds, and on two occasions had very violent gales from the eastward, during which she was hove-to for forty-eight and thirty-six hours respectively. On making the land had fine weather and westerly breezes. Some excitement was caused amongst the small fraternity who live in Worscr Bay yesterday morning by the arrival of a brig in the Strait very much resembling the missing brig Britain’s Pride. Hopes ran high as she bore up for the Heads that it was the long lost vessel, but on nearing the entrance she went about and stood off towards Cape Palliser. She is a vessel probably bound to Napier. Yesterday forenoon Mount Victoria flagstaff had its full complement of distinguishing signals hoisted to the yardarm, a ship, two barques, and a brigantine being announced as in sight. The wind was moderate from the W. and N.W., but the barometer was rapidly descending. The ship Dunbritton, the two barques Duke of Edinburgh and Britomart, and the brigantine Wollomai, besides a number of our coastal mosquito fleet, had just got round Halswell Point, when, without a moment’s notice, the wind chopped round to the S.W., and blew very hard. It stayed in that quarter for about an hour, and then suddenly shifted to the S.E., and blew a living gale. The steamers Taupo and Wellington, which had left the wharf shortly before the buster came on, did not probably face the gale, but anchored in Worser Bay for the night, The barque Duke of Edinburgh, from Newcastle, arrived here yesterday evening. She experienced strong easterly wind across. She left Newcastle the iu middle of last month. The schooners Rose of Eden and Waihopai and the ketch Elizabeth arrived here yesterday afternoon from Pelorus Sound. The ketch Reliance left here yesterday for Wanganui, but as she must have met with the strong gale from the south before she got has in all probability been compelled to anchor in Worser Bay. _ We learn that Captain Williams' barques Edwin Bassett and Anne Melhuish had arrived at Newcastle from this port on the 3rd inst. The Australind, barque, left Newcastle for this port on Wednesday last. . ~ The cutter Dido, from Blenheim, arrived here yesterday morning. Reports the Mary Ann Annison, from‘Newcastle for Lyttelton, and Herald, from Pictou for Timaru, as being at anchor in Port Underwood.
