The E.M.S.S, City of New York, with the San Francisco mail on board, arrived in harbor yesterday at noon. The City of New York is in all respects similar to the City of San Francisco, and as regards the accommodation it is not in the least behind the latter boat. Indeed, all the visitors seemed to agree that if anything the New York was a shade finer. She is under the command of Captain Caverly, formerly of the s.s. Granada. As regards his going into Port Chalmers, Captain Caverly distinctly states his opinion to be that Port Chalmers is utterly unsuited for the reception of such large boats as that which he com mands As the City is now drawing something over 21ft of water, Captain Caverly declare! that he will not enter Port Chalmers unless the pilot makes a statement before witnesses that there is a sufficient depth of water on the bar to allow of his vessel entering the hirbor without touching. Speaking of her voyage, we learn that she arrived at K.andarau on July 6; transferred mails and passengers to City of San Francisco on July 7 ; City of San Francisco sailed same day at 1.30 p.m.; City of Sydney arrived on July 11; sailed in company at 6,50 p.m.; arrived at Auckland July 15 at 7.22 p.m.; sailed July 18 at 3,30 a.m,. arrived at Napier July 17 at 4 p.m.; left again at 5 p.m. same day, and arrived at Wellington as above. Had heavy bead winds and- seas to Napier, since then fine weather. She weighed anchor and sailed for Southern ports at 3 P.m. „ „ . . ~r The Union Company’s s,s.,Taupo, Captain Worsp, left the Mannkau at 2 p.m. on Friday morning, and arrived off Taranaki early next morning ; left again at noon, and arrived at Nelson at 4 a.m. on Sunday ; sailed at 3 p.m. on Monday, and made Picton at 11 p.m. same day ; left again at 4 a.m. yesterday, arriving here at,8.30,. Experienced fine weather throughout. She sailed again for the Southern ports at 3.30 in the afternoon. The s.s. Matau, Captain Urquhart, left Foxton at 5 p.m. on Monday; crossed the bar at 5.30 p.m,; made the Heads at 1.20 a.m., and arrived at the Queen’s wharf at 2 a.m. Had light S.E, winds with smooth water all the way. On the way down she called in at Kapiti, where she. landed an anchor and chain for use in getting off the Eliza McPhee. The Matau will return to Foxton this evening. Captain Bendall, of the three-masted schooner Falcon, has, we understand, been appointed coastal pilot for the Pacific Mail Company’s boats. When a boat arrives at Auckland he will take charge of her, and bring her down and up the coasts. The appointment of an experienced man such as Captain Bendall will to a great extent lessen the chance of the boats not calling in at Napier in bad weather. The schooners Aurora, Aspasia, Colleen Bawn, Day Dawn and Canterbury, from Pelorus Sound, and the ketch Otaki, from Otaki, arrived here yesterday. They are all timber laden. , ~ , ~ . The s s Kiwi, Captain Campbell, left Napier at noon on Saturday, and arrived off Castle Point at 1015 am. on Monday: left again at 11.20 a.m., and arrived here at 2 a.m. yesterday. . Experienced strong southerly breeze to Castle Point; thence to arrival, N.E, with heavy sea. She returned to Napier at 6 ’The schooner Ruby is advertised to sail for Walpapa and Kaikoura to-day. The ship Campcrdown is turning her cargo out in Sr.t rate style. When discharged, she will sail for ‘”n Francisco in ballast, where she will load for Eangatira sailed for Napier and Poverty Bay at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. . , . . Tho barque Panola, 697 tons, was expected to leave New York for Dunedin and Wellington on June 20, with a cargo of notions. The brig J F. Carney, 339 tons, cleared at Boston lor Dunedin on the 27th May, with a cargo of tobacco, preserved fish, a quantity, of timber, agricultural implements, hardware, drugs, and woodenware.
