The time-ball maybe used to-day for rating chronometers, A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 12h. 30m. when the ball drops. Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. The s.s. Kiwi will sail tills afternoon for Napier.
Yesterday was a very busy day on the wharf, the discharge of the English ships being in full swing, there being besides' a number of coastal vessels both loading and discharging. At certain periods of the day the block of traffic on the wharf was something bewildering, carts, expresses, cabs, and merchandise being in one confused mass. The greatest block appeared to be between the centre Ts. It is a wonder that there i 3 not some person on the wharf with sufficient authority to make carters move out of the way when there is an appearance of a block. Otherwise some serious accident will happen. The Pacific Mall Company's steamer City of New York, with the incoming San Francisco mail on board, left Napier for this port at 4.50 p.m yesterday. She should arrive here about 10 o'clock this foienoon. Intending passengers should be on board her without delay, as she will leave two hours after arrival for Lytteltun and Fort Chalmers. The s.s. Kangatira, Captain Evans, arrived here yesterday morning at 10.15. She left Napier at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Experienced strong southerly wind, and was obliged to anchor at Castle Point at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, where she remained for six hours. She will take her departure for Castle Point, Napier, and Poyerty Bay at 4 p.m. to-day. The p.s. Luna sailed yesterday for Cook Strait, for the purpose of surveying the supposed shoal of rocks which it is said the Ileversham struck upon. Captain Underwood and several captains well acquainted with the Strait are of opinion that some submerged rocks do exist somewhere in the vicinity of Tom's Eock, but Captain Falrchild, of the Luna, is most positive in his assertion that no such danger exists. However, it is to be hoped that the survey now being held will have the effect of settling the question. Captain Johnston goes with the Luna for the purpose Of conducting the survey. The p.s. Manawatu and -the s.s. Stormbird sailed for AVanganui last night at 10 o'clock. The latter took the ketch Falcon, bound to Blenheim, in tow, and brought her outside the Heads. The s.s. Matau left Foxton for thi3 port at 5 p.m. yesterday, and should arrive here early this forenoon. She will return again to Foxton to-morrow. The s.s. Taupo will arrive here early this morning from Picton, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Manukau. She will sail for Lyttelfcon and Otago at 3 p.m. to-day. The ship Fitz Eeuter has sailed from Hamburg for this port with 400 immigrants. As she left early in April she may be looked for dally. We understand she is one of the largest sailing vessels that has sailed for this port, being over 2000 tons. Messrs. Krull and Co. are her agents. The barque Anne Melhuiah cleared the Heads yesterday forenoon, as did the barque Edwin Eassctt, and were signalled in the afternoon as being under way. They are both bound for Newcastle. The s.s. Tui left the wharf for the West Coast at 6 p.m. yesterday. She took 35 immigrants for Jackion Bay. The schooners Jane Elkin, Saucy Lass, anil Shepherdess, for Pelorus Sound; Kaikoura, for Kaikoura ; and Excelsior, for Picton, sailed yesterday. The s.s. Otago took her departure for Sydney Via the TTest Coast yesterday at 3.15 p.m. The sUamer Wellington sailed for Picton, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Manukau at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. The Sydney Mornina Iterald says :—Tho barque toq-du-Village, from Newcastle, bound to Dunedln, arrived on June 4 In a leaky condition. Captain Edmonds reports that ho left Newcastle on the 25th May, with a cargo consisting of 459 tons coal, and bound for Dunedln. Experienced a moderate wind veering from E.B.E. to E.N.E.'until the 28th, when it freshened from the latter quarter; bringing up a lump of a »oa. Captain Edmonds then ascertained upon examination that the vessel was making moro TraUr than usual, and on trying the pumps found
that they were, choked. Ho at once prudently bore up for Bay,, where the pumps were lifted and closred. and has come on to Sydney to await !n----structions.from the owners. .
