THE INSURANCE COMPANIES AND THE FIRE BRIGADES.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TTMES. Sib, —I notice in your issue of this morning, that at a meeting yesterday of the City Council Councillor Pharazyn gave it as his opinion that the insurance companies had not acted over liberally in their contributions to the funds of the Central Volunteer Fire Brigade, as they received more benefit from the brigades than the Corporation. I beg to differ with Mr. Pharazyn, and I will ask him if the Corporation, representing as it does the uninsured portion of the community as well as the insured, do not benefit in a far greater degree than the insurance companies by the services of the brigades ? But I go further, and say that the Corporation ought to bear by far the greater proportion of the contribution solicited by the C.V.F. Brigade, if not the whole, and I think the day is not very distant when the Corporation will be called upon to pay the total expense of fire brigades, by which means the pockets of the uninsured will also be reached, though indirectly, and at present this is not the case.—l am, &c, An Insurance Company Agent. Wellington, July 7.
