“KEEP TO THE RIGHT.”

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TTMT Sir, —I do not desire to dispute_,the . sion at which you appear to have arrived, th the Wellinpt.on police are the model force ot the Southern Hemishere. They may be, in all that regards dealing with thieves and brawlers. I fear that their conduct in the Resident Magistrate’s Court here is a model of everything that should be avoided. But I know nothing on this point except what I read in the newspapers, and I may be old-fashioned. T confess to old fashiouedness as to one thing, and about it, as far as the police are concerned, I want information. Why do they constantly keep to the wrong side of the footpath ? lam a believer in the good old rule that pedestrians should “keep to the right.” Why are the police officers always on the side which is not right ? Are they a law unto themselves as to this matter ? Might they not advantageously observe; that which is certainly supposed by many people to be a rule ? Would it hurt them if they did “ keep to the right ?” Would it be too common-place a use of their g power, if they tried now and then to persn. or even to coerce—larrikins and louts ot different classes into the belief that it is desirable all walkers should “keep to the right ?”—I am, &0., , R. X-, July, 1876. ‘
