(per press agency.) Auckland, Thursday. Tho City East election resulted in the return of Rees by a majority of 31. The voting was — Rees, 300; Clark, 260. At the Eden nomination tho show of hands was—Carlton, 3; A. K. Taylor, 6; Tole, 31. Grahamhtown, Thursday. Fifteen candidates were proposed, including Sir George Grey nud Sir Julius Vogel. Show of hands as follows: —Groy, 87 ; Rowe, ISI ; Robert Graham, 8 ; Carpenter, 51 ; H. E. Campbell (lawyer), 2 ; John Gibbous, 122 ; Comes, CO ; A. Brodie, 58 ; Charles O’Neill, 1; Stephenson, GO ; Leyden, 37 ; Sir Julius Vogel, 21 ; C. F. Mitchell, 109 ; J. Mackay, 182 ; and John Sheehan, 9. A ruse was adopted which deprived intended proposer and seconder of Sir George Grey from speaking. Carpenter was then proposed merely to speak

in favor o£ Grey, who was not present. Carpenter and Brodie have retired. Mackay’s speech was an attack on Grey, Mackay will not contest the seat. The proceedings occupied over three hours. Grey held a meeting last night, which was largely attended. Napier, Thursday. The result of the poll to-day is;—Country— McLean : Wairoa, 33; Petane, 13; Puketapu, 11; Taradale, 35; Meanee, 13; Hastings, 13 Russell: Wairoa, 30; Puketapu, 11; Taradale, 39; Meanee, 7; Hastings, 13. Colenso: Wairoa, 4; Hastings, 1. Stuart: Petane, 1; Taradale, 5; Meanee, 7; Hastings, 9. Total poll, town and country— r McLean, 330 ; Kussell, 200 ; Stuart, 173 ; Colenso, 3S; Ferard, 13. McLean and Russell were elected. Timaru, Thursday. Mr. Stafford is elected for Timaru without opposition. He made only a few remarks, promising a full address on Friday next. He stated he was strongly in favor of the Timaru breakwater on Sir John Coote’s plan.
