(VBOM OVII OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Westport, Friday. At the sitting of the District Court to-day, a bankrupt named McKenna had his certificate suspended for fifteen mouths for fraudulent preference. The Halciono Quartz Mining Company, in which people here have invested heavily, has come to grief. The company has £IO,OOO worth of machinery on the ground, and has spent £3OOO in works. A winding-up order has been applied for, but it is believed arrangements will be made for carrying on the workings. The yield has fallen off latterly. There is a report of a new alluvial die. gings, eight miles from town, but no application for a protection for a prospecting claim has yet been lodged. (PER PRESS AGENCY.) Masterton, Tuesday. The road from Masterton to Manawatu Gorge through the Seventy-Mile Bush is completed. Mr. Hastwell will probably drive a coach and four through this week.
Auckland, Wednesday. J. M. Clark addressed the City East electors last night. He declared unequivocally for abolition and against separation, but was prepared to fight under any leader who would make the laud fund colonial revenue. Wanganui, Tuesday. The nomination for Wanganui is fixed for January 3, and the polling for January 7. The Chronicle, which was being proceeded against for aspersion thrown on Mr. Hutchison during the Mayoralty election in Wellington, publishes an apology this morning, giving the name of IMr. Henry Anderson, of Wellington, as that of their informant. A unanimous vote of confidence was given to Atkinson at Mauutahi last night. The claim preferred by Dr. Bnller on behalf of the Waugaebu natives for.damage to land by railway works and desecration of burial places, has boon settled by arbitration. Award made of £775. Donudin, Tuesday. The Dunedin elections took place on Monday. No business doing, the excitement being intense. The:result of the poll was as follows: —Macandrew, 891; Stout, 865; Laruach, 843; Keyuold, 476 ;‘ Macassey, 409 ; Fish, 238. Macandrew, Stout, and Laruach were put forward by the Anti-central League, and were thus elected. The difference between Reynolds and the three elected persons has caused immense surprise.
