Messrs. Pearce and Hunter invito the electors of Wellington to moot them opposite the Princess Hotel, Molesworth-street, at 7 o’clock this evening. Mr. Brandon addressed ft meeting of the •Country District electors, at Pahautanui, on Saturday evening last, and received a vote of confidence. Mr. Travers addressed an open air meeting of electors at Thorndon last night. There were between sixty and seventy persons proisent. Mr. G. H. Yennell occupied the chair. Mr. Travers, amongst other things, abused the New Zealand Times at some considerable length. ' Mr. J. H. Wallace met the electors at Kaiwarra last evening. There was a good attendance ; J. S. Guilford, Esq., in the chair. Mr. Wallace explained his views at full length, and received a unanimous vote of confidence and thanks. Last evening a meeting of the residents in Te Aro was held at the Buckle-street schoolroom for the purpose of electing a school board for that school. There was a largo attendance. The Hon, W. Gisborne occupied the chair, and opened the meeting by explaining tbe objects of tbe meeting, and congratulating the meeting on the largo attendance of scholars at the Buckle-street school. A committee of five were required ; a dozen gentlemen were nominated, and the question arose as to how the vote should be taken. Finally, a gentleman was sent round with a candle, a bottle of ink, a pen, and a sheet of •paper containing the names of those nominated, to request each person present to tick off his “ fancy.” Some objected that this was scarcely regular, that persons who neither paid rates nor had any interest in the school might vote it they pleased, and that a person having oueo voted might vote again, and sundry other objections of a singular character. At length Mr. J. E. George was persuaded to believe that this mode of procedure was not quite correct, and therefore ho moved the adjournment of the meeting. This was agreed to, and the meeting was adjourned till this evening, when a poll will be taken in a proper manner. The follow - ing gentlemen are the candidates nominated : Messrs. Linford, James Smith, George, E. M. Kiaser, McDougall, W. Waring Taylor, Hopkirk, Blair, Kennedy, McDonald, Gaby, Russell, Charles Gray, and Rev. Mr. De Castro. The distribution of prizes in connection with the Wellington College took place yesterday, and a report of the proceedings will bo found in the supplement. , A meeting of the Philosophical Society will be held at the Museum to-night.

A man named Steinmueller, a resident of Taranaki-street, shot himself through the head with a revolver this morning at about half-past one. Dr. Bradford was speedily in attendance, but \ gave no hope of his recovery. Sergeant Price had the unfortunate man removed to the Hospital. The lecture to he given at the Hutt this evening by Commander Hewitt, R.N., will be supplemented by some elaborate scenic' displays. At the Theatre Royal to-night, Mr. Burford (one of the most popular actors in Wellington) takes a benefit, when he will appear in one of his best characters, as Jacob McCloskey, Mr. Wheatleigh appearing in the character of Salem Soudder. A good attendance may be looked for. The following crews will represent the Wellington Rowing Club at the Nelson Regatta, to be held on Monday next;—Whaleboat Race, “Cure,” Rickman (bow), Daniells, Dixon, McGrath, Anderson (stroke), Collins (coxswain). Pair-oared Race, “ Alexandra Pimp,” Rickman (bow), Anderson (stroke), Collins (coxswain). At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Robert Davies, who was proved to have wantonly set fire to a quantity of gor.se in a paddock off Cuba-street, on 15th inst, was fined 20a. The act of defendant gave the fire brigades a needless journey in the middle of Wednesday last. A woman named Eventhez Garthy, was fined 20s. for having been drunk and incapable on Saturday. A meeting of the electors of Tawa Plat Took place at the schoolhouse, on Thursday evening, to hear Mr. Brandon express his political views. The meeting was well attended. After hearing him, and several questions having been asked, Mr. Taylor proposed and Mr. Greer seconded, “ That this meeting has every confidence in Mr. Brandon, and pledges itself to support him in the coming election, which was carried unanimously. We hear that the N.Z.S.S. Company intend making excursion trips about this harbor on Monday next (Boxing Day), with their steamers Bangatira and Manawatu. And we understand that the company will also ran a boat to Nelson and back, leaving early on Christmas Day, returning here early on Tuesday morning. Passage at their usual rates at holiday times, 10s. per head. Also, another boat to Picton and back on Boxing Day, at os. per head, as charged last year. A meeting of the committee of the Wellington Rifle Association was held at Mr. J. Turner’s shop, Willis-street, on Saturday, the 18th inst., Lieutenant Scott in the chair. It was decided that the next annual competition for prizes should take place on the Lower Hutt rifle range in the month of February, due notice of which will be given. A programme of prizes will be settled at the next meeting. It was decided that the subscriptions for the ensuing year should be collected forthwith, and members are respectfully requested to pay the same to the treasurer, Lieutenant Scott; or Mr. J. Turner, Willis-street. Yesterday Mr. Duncan sold the privileges to booths, &c., on the Basin Reserve on New Year’s Day, the occasion of the Caledonian Society’s fete. The prices realised were as follows :—No. 1, or the grand stand, T. Jones, £27 10s.; No. 2 booth, T. Jones, £l6 ; No, 3 booth, T. Jones, £l9 ; No. 4, T. Jones, £l6 ; No. 1 refreshment booth, D. Morgan, £7 ; No. 2 refreshment booth, D. Morgan, £4 ; fancy bazaar, Mr.Goldsohmidt, £3. Mr.fJ. H. Wallace also sold the right to erect booths on the same ground on Boxing Day, the occasion of the Foresters’ fete, as follows :—Publicans’ booths Nos. 1,2, 3, and 4, for £56, to Mr. T. Jones. Fancy bazaars, Nos. X and 2, for £3 Bs., to Mr. Goldschmidt. Mr. W. Jordan obtained the right of charging admission to the grand stand for £5 10s., making a total of £64 15s. An interesting event took place at Tawa Flat on Friday, the 17th instant, when prizes were distributed amongst the children attending the school under the Education Board, the local committee and other gentlemen interested in the district having liberally subscribed towards purchasing prizes and giving the children a picnic. Their efforts were rewarded by a handsome array of books on Friday. Mr. Brandon, ex-chairman of the Education Board, who happened to be present on a political visit, distributed the prizes, and shortly addressed the children on their schooldays. Some of the higher prizes were of considerable value, such as Milton’s Poetical Works, Mrs. Heman’s Poetical Works, and Women of History, &c. There is to be a picnic in connection with the prize-giving on Tuesday, when the children will be driven to a suitable place around Porirua Bay. Games and tempting edibles are to be provided for them, and no doubt they will spend a pleasant dav.
