(FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Webti'OßT, Monday. Warden Broad, of Beefton, is appointed Resident Magistrate here, vice Dr. Gales, who succeeds Major Edwards as Resident Magistrate at Wanganui. (PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Monday. Herbert Simpson was drowned at Papukura while endeavoring to savo stock from the floods. The Peerless, from the South Sea Islands, reports several hurricanes at one of the islands. Two schooners were driven ashore. A Russian vessel had to lower her topmasts. The floods have subsided in all the out districts. The weather is fine. A young lad, Charles Lyell, sent to Parnell Orphanage by the Odd Fellows of Ross, Westland, was drowned while going a message. Invercargill, Monday. The Supreme Court Sessions opened to-day, before Mr. Justice Williams. There were only four cases on the calendar, three of larceny and one of arson. The Grand Jury found true bills in the larceny cases Regina v. Connor, Regina v. Casey, and Regina v. Campbell. The two first pleaded guilty, and Connor (a woman) was sentenced to four months' hard labor, and Casey to six months' hard labor. Campbell pleaded not guilty, and was acquitted

by the petty jury. The Grand "Jury threw out the bill against J. McGlashan, for arson, and made a presentment congratulating Judge Williams on his first appearance on the Supreme Court bench in Invercargill. The Judge, replying, said he was struck with the appearance of universal prosperity which had arisen in Invercargill since his last visit two or thi-co years ago. Dunedin, Monday. In all probability, the following will be nominated for the city on Thursday:—T. Dick, W. Langland, H. S. Fish, Hooper, j! P. Armstrong, Macassey, Reynolds, and Liu'iinch. E. B. Cargill and C. S. Reeves doolino to stand. G. E. Barton had intended standing for the city, but an insuperable objection was that his name does not appear on the rolls. John Roberts, M.P.C., will stand for Caversham.
