RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Thursday, December 9. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M.) VAGRANCY. Peter Anderson was charged with vagrancy, having been loafing and begging since his' arrival in this town per ship Herschel. The evidence of the constable who arrested the prisoner was to the effect that he had been an annoyance to more than one person, Mr. Barber among them, and had been cautioned frequently. Prisoner pleaded hard to be let off, and made promises to amend. His Worship said he would give the prisoner a chance, and so dismissed him with the caution that should he make his appearance in court he .would be sentenced to one mouth’s imprisonment. DRUNKENNESS. John Johnston was convicted of being drunk and incapable, and fined ss. and costs, or 21 hours’ imprisonment. Robert Johnston was charged with having been drunk and incapable. It appeared that defendant had been up the day after the races on a similar charge, but was let off in consideration of the holiday. Pined 20s. and costs, or 48 hours’ imprisonment. James Collins, charged with having been drunk and incapable, was fined ss. and costs, with the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment. CIVIL CASES. In the following cases Judgment went for plaintiffs, with costs :—Jeffs v, Blake, claim £ls Ss.; Isaac v. Peterson, claim £4 13a. Id.; Gear v. Watson, claim £S 18s. 10d. adjourned cases. The following cases were adjourned : Burrett v. Skeet, claim for £ll Is. 2d.; Isaac v. McDonald, for £l3 ss. 2d.; Lang v. Isherwood, for £9 14s. 3d. OTHER CASES. In addition to those enumerated above, there were two other cases, one in which the -summons had not been served, and another in which the defendant had paid the money into Court. Friday, December 10. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M.) Thomas Allan was charged by J. K. Lyness with having assaulted him while drunk, but there was no appearance of the complainant when the case came on, and defendant was discharged. Henry Lawrence was charged with having assaulted a Mrs. Murphy, and doing certain damage to the latter’s property. The case was proved, and his Worship imposed a fine of 10s. and costs 7s. 6d-'; or, in default, defendant to be sent to gaol for 48 hours. Edward Brown was charged with having assaulted Marion Sophia Kyelson. There was no appearance of plaintiff, and the case was therefore struck out. A charge of breach of Municipal Corporations Act against John Pickering was adjourned for a week. George Pain, charged with using threatening language towards Annie Maria Pain, was remanded for eight days, the man appearing to be suffering from the effects of excessive drinking.
