Go-Ahead, Captain Ansten, came to an anchor off the wharf at 8 p.m. on Sunday from Taranaki and Manakau, which latter port she left on Friday and Taranaki on Saturday. In consequence of her having powder on board, she shifted to the powder ground yesterday forenoon. # The s.s. Kiwi. Captain Campbell, arrived and anchored inside the Heads at 1 a.m. yesterday from Napier and East Coast, and came alongside the wharf at Ba.m. She left again last night at 8 ©clock, for The g_g_ Taranaki, Captain Lloyd, steamed for Southern ports at 4.20 yesterday afternoon. We are pleased to learn of the long-earned promotion of Mr. Bowling, chief officer of the ship Avalanche, who proceeds to the Bluff on Thursday to command of the barque Adamant, vacant by the death of her captain on the voyage out from London. His brother, at present second officer, also being pro moted to chief of the Avalanche. The Union Company’s s.s. Taupo, with the San Francisco mail, may be expected here early to-morrow *°The°b.s. Eangatira, Captain Griffiths, left on her usual East Coast trip at 5.30 last evening. , The new screw Tui, recently launched at Dunedin, sailed from that port on Saturday evening, and arrived at Kaiioura some time yesterday. She is expected here early this morning.
TRIAL TRIP OF THE S.S. TUI. The following trial trip of the as. Tui is copiedfrom the Ofago Daily Times of December I According to the invitations issued by Messrs. Sparrow and Co., about 250 persons assembled yesterday on board the new screw steamer Tui to take part in a trial trip, or, as it might with propriety be termed, an excursion trip. The steamer left the Rattray-street wharf at 1.20 p.m. Captain Tall being in charge, and a more competent man to navigate the harhor conld scarcely be found. A strong band of wmmriiim enlivened the scene 'considerably, and refreshments in galore had been provided for the visitors, to which, it is scarcely necessary to ample Justice was done, perfect order prevailing during both the upward and downward trip. The downward trip was made in the face of a fresh N.E. breeze and strong flood tide; but, despite this, the good little boat made the distance from the red beacon at the end of Rattray-street to Port Chalmers in one hour and a quarter; very good time indeed, taking all the adverse circumstances into consideration. Up to this time the engines had worked very smoothly indeed, making 115 revolutions with 651bs. Cf steam indicated on the pressure guage, the vacuum fuage indicating twenty-two inches. A stay of an onr was made at Port Chalmers, during which the band enlivened that township with a few airs. Then a fresh start was made, and a capital run effected to the Timaru Lightship, round which the steamer was beaded and theretum trip commenced. Port Chalmers was now passed by, and a straight run to Dunedin made, the Rattray-street wharf being reached at 6.30 p m every one being highly pleased with their outing,’’ no mishap of any kind occurring to mar the day's enjoyment. The upward trip, it may be mentioned was made at 115 revolutions, 651bs. pressure and win vac. Mr. Crawford, Inspector of Machinery, and Mr. Darling, Engineer to the Union S. S. Company, were on board during the trip, and expressed themselves In high admiration of the manner in which the engines worked. „ , Now lor a few words concerning the vessel. She was constructed by Messrs. Sparrow and Co., to the order of Messrs. Seager and Co., of Wellington, and is intended to trade between ■ Lyttelton and the Waitara, calling at the Kaikouras and Wellington, and will be commanded by Captain .Bonner, who is well known on the West Coast and other ports of New Zealand for his many excellent qualities as a master mariner. Mr. Berryman will be his second, while the engines will be entrusted to the charge of Mr. Spiers. In length, she is 100 ft. on keel; over-all, 108 ft.; breadth, 10ft.; depth of hold, 7ft. «in. Her frame consists of 2}in. angle Iron, with 18in. centres. The plating varies from |in, in the garboard streak to Jin. plates on the sides, the shear streak being fin. thick, and 3ft. wide. She has not been measured yet, but it is calculated that she will carry 110 tons on a draught of oft., her probable register being about 70 tons. She has a very commodious and well appointed cabin aft, capable of accommodating 17 passengers, there being also, what is not often found In small vessels, a lavatory and roomy steward’s pantry and store room. On deck, on the port side, are quarters for the master, mate, and engineer, while on the starboard side is a ladies’ cabin for six passengers, and fitted with many necessary conveniences. A
steam winch will be shipped at Wellington, where it has been prepared for her. She has a very spacious hold and roomy deck, which will bo wanted in the trade in which she will be engaged, a' great portion of it comprising sheep carrying. The engines are of 22 horse power nominal, capable of working up to 100, and it is expected the vessel will attain a speed of 8 knots at sea, on a consumption of 4 tons of coal per day. They have been constructed on the compound principle—the low-pressure cylinder being 20in. and the high pressure llin., with a 12in. stroke—and are certainly a credit to the makers, being well finished at every- point, as was conclusively proved yesterday. The boiler is a tubular one, having one furnace, is made of the best material, and is well calculated to perform the work which it will have allotted to it. The screw is three-bladed, and so constructed that the fans can bo screwed off and on at pleasure—a great advantage, as in the event of a fan being broken the vessel can be hauled on a bank, and at low water refitted with another fan, while, under the old system, it would be necessary to have the vessel docked.
