THE ELECTION FOR THE CITY.
TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sie, —Mr. George Hunter's address to the electors is undoubtedly a clever piece of composition. I tMnV however, if slightly altered, it -would be more easily understood. Thus, with reference to Provincial Government, if the candidate had stated that, as a member of the Provincial Executive—" I have done all I possibly could to perpetuate Provincial Government. I have approved, endorsed, and encouraged Mr. Fitzherbert and • Mr. Bunny in all that politically vicious or questionable daring their administration, sad in the "House of Representatives I defended provincial institutions to the very gasp, and now finding the course I have pursued is likely to endanger my re-election, I shall, if elected, make it my business to assist in passing laws which will carry out the principles of local self-government. “ I have faith in the Public Works scheme, because • carrying it out involves the construction of railroads *.and other costly works, and will, by increasing the value of property, so enrich myself, and other landed ' proprietors. ■ That we shall, in a few years, become wealthy beyond the dream of avarice. “ The*absurd cry for an income and property tax I was at first inclined to treat with contempt, but as 1 find that such a course may also endanger my re-elec-tion, I am inclined to give the subject my consideration at a suitable and convenient season. • - ‘‘Minor matters, such as education, finance, immigration, a reform of thfe Licensing Act, &c., will doubtless receive ■ every attention in the new Parliament. In the meantime, I think the affairs of the colony are progressing satisfactorily, and should not at present be disturbed-**—lam, &c., ■ A* Supporter op Pearce and Travers.
