Electoral Notices affecting themselves. Landlords should be treated as men desirous of conforming to the law, and not as suspicious characters to he kept in awe by a policeman’s baton, or an Inspector’s caprice or spite. Gentleman, these are some of my opinions on social and political matters. ;I shall endeavor to carry out the provisions. of the Ballot Act in its integrity, although X do not approve The individual independence of Britons made England what it is ; and if ever New Zealand is to become a powerful Nation its Sons must learn to speak the sentiment of their mind fearlessly and firmly. I shall attend no Public Meetings,, where political bias is rampant, hut state my views in this journal, the managers of which have treated me with liberality. Should I he one of your choice, you may rely on it that no-one will more unceasingly watch over the interest of the City, and the Colony at large to the best of his ability, Than Gentlemen, ‘ Your obedient'servant, C. MOODY. , - Wellington, November 26, 1875. T O THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF WELLINGTON. Gentlemen, — Reference was made a few days since by a writer in the Post to my connection. with the Co-operative Bakery t and Butchering Society, to their failure, and to' the hard things said of me, of which the writer, professed to have a lively remembrance, although he, not being present, must have had it second hand. ' • •••!•. . I was the originator of the Bakery Society, and spent some time, labor, and a little money to establish it. For the first four' months of, its existence I was the managing. spirit, or, may be, the domineering Secretary. But that spirit of jealousy of their fellows which unfortunately exists among many of the' working class was so cleverly manipulated, by. certain parties who .hesitated not in.accusing me of peculation, that I was—l have said- Jt ■ previously, and I repeat it—X was kicked out. , What was the consequence ? The business t yas carried on some three months longer, and then collapsed. The books were placed in the lands of Mr. T. Kennedy Macdonald, who, laving them in his possession some eight or ; line months, reported to a meeting of the: nembers on the 3rd of November last that my icpounts were O.K. One of the largest, ireditors, who held shares, proposed that I should be reinstated, and it was carried nein '.on: - ‘ Cheap , bread is the order of the day, and, vhile l have health the bakers’ combination to •aise prices is 'all XI. P. ' I was not the sole promotor of the Butoherng Society, but' acted in conjuction with >thers, who left me in the lurch when the >lnch came. Yet I succeeded so far that mother firm was introduced into the trade, vho have held their own. The monopoly >reviously existing has been so far broken that here are now five' butchers competing for the mstom of the public, where previously there vere in effect only two. Neither of the ocieties are defunct—they are in a state of ransitiou from which they will issue, if needs )e, stronger than ever. But what about the tobys and the charge, for ools ? The Post mentioned hot the interesting act that the deductions from the Council barges for laying on water services, averaging ifty shillings each house, was due tO;iny exerions, and cost me some little outlay. Gentlemen, I have now done with personal ixplanations, recrimination, and retorts, and ntend to go seriously to work. X am a plain man, English. to. the hacklone, with no pretension to.learning or ability; int there is no man iuiNew Zealand who. Will xpose an abuse with greater zest. I am, Gentlemen, Yours obediently, • O. MOODY. 0 I T Y C O XI N • O I L. ELECTION OP MAYOR.
