(from our special corrksponmsnt.) Westport, Wednesday. The Royal Commission has fairly begun to mow down the list of claims. During the hearing of a case yesterday, it transpired that one claimant won his section, value £4l, at a ;game of cards. There have been some strange I circumstances connected with the colliery reserve. It has been commissioned to death. 'The Nelson Government have appointed the | Commissioners, but all attempts to settle the matter hitherto seem to have made confusion worse confounded. Well-meaning citizens are glad that the affair is to be brought to a final issue, which seems not far distant. A claim for £2600 was heard yesterday, the section having been taken by Government for railway purposes.

Sir Cracroft Wilson addressed the electors of Heatehcote district last night. A vote of confidence in him was negatived on the voices. Dunedin, Wednesday. The Stewards’ Purse, of 35 sovs., distance one mile and a-half, welter weights for age— H. Yeend’s Rory O’More, 12st., 1 ; Goodman’s Blair Athol, Bst. 121b5., 2. Betting any odds on Rory O’More. Only two started, and kept together till entering the straight the second time, when Yeend let Rory out and won in a canter. The Grand Stand Handicap, of 40 sovs.,, a mile and a quarter—Yeend’s Rory O’More, Bst. 21bs ,1; Paterson’s Blue Peter, 6st. lOlbs., 2 ; Smith’s Wee Lad, 7st. lOlbs., 3. Pertobe and Pakeha scratched. Betting, even on Rory O’More, 3 to 2 Wee Lad, 2 to 1 Blue Peter. Steamer had a splendid start. Coming past the stand the first time Peter had the lead, with Wee Lad next, Rory third. At tlie gate Rory took second place. Coming into the straight Rory came away from the lot, winning easily by four lengths, the rest nowhere. Time, 2 min. 20J sec.
