RANGITIKEI HIGHWAY BOARD.
(FROST OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The usual monthly meeting of the Rangitikei Highway Board was held in the Board’s office, Marten, on Saturday last. Present—Mr. A. Milne (in the chair), Messrs. A. Cameron, B. IC Simpson, A. Simpson, O. Calpin, J. Bull, and Dr. CurL MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary read the following correspondence ; Letter from his Honor the Superintendent, notifying the confirmation of the construction order to open Cameron and McKay’s and Hunt’s roads. Kesolved—That the officers of the Board be instructed to open these roads, in compliance with the order of his Honor the Superintendent. Letter from Mr. Rees Thomas, offering £1 for the old timber lately removed from the Tutaenui bridge on the Jefferson line, near Mr. Galpin’s. Resolved—That the disposal of the timber in question be left in the hands of the inspector. inspector’s report. ■ The Inspector read his monthly report, which was dealt with in the usual manner. STANDING ORDERS. The standing orders, as amended at the last meeting of the Board, were read and adopted. BUSINESS. It was resolved—That the inspector be authorised to lay off the cutting on the road to the Kangitikei River, through Major Willis’s land, at a gradient of one in seventeen, instead of one in nine as at present. It was resolved—That the cuttings on the roads to Messrs. Howie and Watts and Peacock’s properties, and also that to the Messrs. Newman’s property, be not dealt with at present. It was resolved—That the inspector be instructed to write and notify Mr. Lethbridge that if he do not take immediate steps to get the furze removed from off the roadsides adjoining his property, the inspector would employ men to do it. It was resolved—That the inspector he instructed to see Mr. Lethbridge and obtain his sanction to get the Oroua stream turned where damaging the Turakina valley road, and that the inspector be authorised to get the work done at once. It was also resolved—That the inspector see Mr. Lethbridge in reference to clearing out the drain through his paddock, to prevent injury to the Turakina valley road, and to report at the next meeting of the Board. It was resolved—That the Chairman and Mr. Galpin be appointed to make arrangements for the opening of the road to connect the Fern Flat with the Tutaenui line. It was resolved—That the solicitor be instructed to give Mr. Alexander Cockburn notice to remove the fence on the road adjoining the Porewa River, and place the same at least one chain from the bank of the stream.
It was resolved —That a sum not exceeding £ls be placed at the disposal of the inspector for repairs to the above road. It was resolved —That the inspector be instructed to call for tenders for the formation of aljout 100 chains of the Turakiua native reserve road, commencing at the boundary of the Lethbridge local district. It was resolved —That the sum of £ls be placed at the disposal of the inspector for expenditure on the bridle track near Weston’s, and that tenders be called for metalling portions of the same, such tenders to be opened at the next meeting of the Board. It was resolved —That the time for which permission was granted to Mr. John Nesbitt, to erect a gate on the Jefferson line, adjoining his property, be Jextended for one year from this date. It was resolved—That the action taken by the chairman in permitting Mr. Alexander Oockbum to erect a gate on the Porewa line, adjoining his property, be confirmed. Mr. George Death made personal application for assistance in improving the road into his place. After a lengthy discussion, bearing on the question of its being a public or private road, it was eventually decided to let the matter remain in abeyance for the present. Mr. W. Howie, jun., made personal application for assistance in making a road to his property. He offered to do 10 chains of cutting if the Board would do 20 chains ; or he would do the 30 chains for £3O. Resolved, —That Mr. Howie’s offer of £3O for the whole work be accepted, on condition that he wait six mouths for payment. The following applications were sent in for assistance towards cutting down scrub, &c., on the roadsides, whilst cutting furze ;—Messrs. W. H. Crawford, C. Meyers, T. M. Pleetwood, and O. F. Hanneki. It was decided not to entertain the question of assistance in the matter in any shape. GOVERNMENT GRANT. It was resolved—That the secretary be instructed to write to the Provincial Secretary and ascertain what amount of the £SOOO placed upon the Estimates for Road Boards, has been allocated to the Rangitilcei Highway Board, and when the payments on account may be expected. Nitschke, at 20s. per chain. For ditto, Tutaenui line, near Maunders’—X lamiery Brothers, at 265. 6d. per chain. For ditto, Tutaenui line, near Messrs, Ross and Moßeth’s—Flannery Bros., at 225. 9d. per chain. For ditto, between the Junction a.nd Glen Church—B. Johnston, at 21s. per chain. For widening the Glen-road, near Mr. Simpson’s and Mrs. Gower’s —Charles Nolan, at Bs. Cd. per chain, ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting in the aggregate to £3BO 12s. sd. were passed for payment. TIIEASUUEII’S STATEMENT. The Tueasukeb read his usual monthly statement, showing at date a credit balance of £495 16s. 6d. The meeting then adjourned until Saturday, 4th December, at half-past ten o’clock a.m.
