In the import markets sales to a considerable extent have been reported, notwithstanding that an appearance of inactivity and want of animation has been the prevailing aspect throughout the day Breadstuff s are firm, and sales of flour are making at £l3 ss. to £l3 7s. 6d. Wheat is wanted and for prime northern 6s. 7d. to 6s. Bd. can be got, but there is still little offering. In the absence of supplies of fine, other and inferior descriptions are coming into notice. We learn of the quittance of 700 bags of Tasmanian coast wheat at »s. 9d. to ss. lOd Oats are not active. We hear, however, that business is pending, though no sales can yet be reported. Quotations, according to quality, range from 3s, 4d to 3s 9d Maize is rather better ;an improved inquiry ?s experienced, and 4s. Sd. to 4s. 9d. is demanded SuSra are quiet, and no special business has reached us° Under the hammer, 300 bags in faulty condition were quitted at £25 ss. to £3O 10s. The Andaman which has just arrived from Port Louis, has brought the first of the new sugars. The samples are on view to-day, and the assortment appears most suitable for trade purposes. The shipment will be sold on an early day The advices to hand by this vessel reach to 30th September, and though we have dates bv telegram to 14th October, yet the following details w'ill be found of some interest. From private communications we learn that sugar was, in active demand during the month for the colonial market and 10 vessels had been loaded including four for New Zealand. The Lord Macduff was to bring a portion of the Canada's cargo, which vessel had been condemned there. The market was fairly supplied with dry white sugars, and brewers crystals were arriving a little more freely, but yellows were very scarce ; the manufacture of such sugars had only commenced recently. White aud greyish whites had been largely bought for Bombay and the demand continued brisk. Quotations ruled at 730d01. for finest white crystals, and low to fine white crystals ranged from 6.25d01. to 7.25d01.; low to finest white counters, at 6.25d01. to 7.25d01. There were no finest yellow crystals in the market. Good to fine brought 6 ?sdol to 6 40dol ; low to finest yellow counters, 5 75d01. to 6.60d01. ; brewers' crystals 6,50d0l to 7dol; rations were very scarce, and ruled at 425d0i. to 5 50dol The clearances were—on September 15, the Helen, for Port Phillip (arrived), and the Garron, for Lyttelton ; on the 16th, the Sarah Burnyent for Adelaide, and the Lochiel and Mayflower for New Zealand ; on the 23rd, the Pioneer, for Hobarton ; on the 27th. the Johan Iverdrup, for J«ew Zealand ; and on the 30th, the Andaman, for Melbourne (arrived). The Eunice was about to load for Adelaide for orders. The St. Marc had arrived from Melbourne with produce. Shipments to date of_ the new crop were smaller than any for years previous. Frei"hts were quoted at 455. to 475. 6d. and 5 per cent to New Zealand; 30s. and 5 per cent to Hobarton; and 20s. to 225. 6d. and 5 per cent, to \delaide. Exchange on Australia was 5 per cent, premium, and on New Zealand 4 per cent, premium. The advices regarding candles have imparted a further impetus to that market, 4900 boxes altogether having changed hands in parcels ranging from 1000 to 1600 boxes in a line. Brandon s, De Boubaix's &c, have been amongst the parcels disposed of. Kerosene oil continues to obtain notice. AVe hear of 2000 cases Devoe's having been placed at Is. 4d .and for a parcel of 500 cases diamond Is. 3d. was realised. We learn that the balance of the Stratheden s shipment of Columbian River salmon, in cask, to the extent of 1600 packages has changed hands on private terms. A very full Price is stated to have been paid, but the quality is very superior. We are informed that re-sales to a considerable extent have also been made at a satisfactory advance. In teas we note sales of fine to extra fine congous at Is. lid. to 2s. sd. In liquids we note a brisk demand for Hennessys case brandy, and sales have been made at 30s. to 30s. 6d. on the wharf.
