This morning a deputation representing the residents of Tapanui, and consisting of Captain Mackenzie, Messrs. G. Turnbull and B. Bradshaw, waited upon the Superintendent, for the purpose of requesting his Honor to urge on the Provincial Government the advisability of constructing a line of railway from Waipahi, on the main trunk line, to Tapanui. Mr. Bradshaw said that the residents in the district considered that they had a right to have the line constructed, on account of the large sums of money the Government had received from the sales of land in the neighborhood. The Superintendent in reply said that when he put the matter before the General Government, when he was in Wellington, the reply was that they were not in a position. to construct the line. He also added that it was one of those lines that there was not the slightest doubt the Provincial Council would undertake if it continued in existence ; so that if the settlers wanted it, they had better pray for the continuance of Provincialism. They would never get it in any other way, unless they constructed it themselves. It is stated that Mr. James Green, Secretary for Works, intends to oppose Mr. McGlashan for Roslyn.
