THE HOLIDAY.

To-day is to be observed as a general holiday, it being the anniversary of the Prince of Wales’ birth. Preparations have been made on an extensive scale for making the occasion as enjoyable as it should be. Of outdoor sports there will be plenty, to take place on the Victoria Recreation Ground. It is to be hoped that the weather (which bears a character for consistency) will prove inconsistent for once, otherwise the effect of the sports will be somewhat spoiled; All tastes have been considered by those who have had the providing of the programme and general arrangement of amusements, the sports, as will be seen by the programme, being of a vailed and attractive character. Moreover, there is sure to be much of that impromptu fun seen on all holiday occasions and wherever there is a large gathering of pleasure seekers. One of the attractions of the day will be the excursion trip, the Odd Fellows’ Hall Committee having made arrangements for such. The p.s. Manawatu will leave the Queen’s wharf at 9 a,m,, 10.30 a.m., 12 noon, and2.3o p.m., returning via the Heads. As stated in the advertisement announcing the above fact, a quadrille band will be in attendance (any other band would do as well), and as an improvement on the quadrille band, we are told that cheap refreshments will be provided. To'some this latter item in the advertisement will prove most interesting. Should the weather prove fine, nothing could be more enjoyable than this excursion trip. The Manawatu is well suited for the purpose, and the committee have made every additional arrangement they could to ensure the comfort of voyagers. To those who do not take an interest in sports, are indifferent to excursion trips on the water, but who riiay have a weakness for railways and green fields, special trains are to run (for hours of starting see advertisement). These trains run straight to the Hutt, that is, as straight as the line will let theiri, they will not stop at any intermediate stations. At the Hutt a tea meeting will be held in the evening, as well as other amusements. At night, in the town, the Theatre Royal Company will present a very attractive programme, The' Prince of Wales’ Birthday is always ari occasion of rejoicing, and will be so long as that gentleman is in existence to remind us that he had a birthday, and the present occasion, it is to be hoped, will not differ from others that have gone before.
