Ma'or Gordon has als6 ordered the volunteer baud not to appear in. the street ovation. J. M. Clark in reply to a requisition today consented to stand for City East. An address of thanks was presented to Mr. Swanson by the Ponsonby Board, for his services dining the sitting of the Assembly. Napier, Monday. Robert Stuart (Mayor), and Captain W. H. Russell, have issued addressees to the electors of Napier. These, with Sir Donald McLean, will ’ make three candidates for two seats. There, are no addresses as yet for Clive. Ormond most probably will be re-elected. Alexandra, Monday. Scott, charged with cattle stealing, who escaped from the police, is still at large. Election matters are being talked about here, and the people are not of unanimous opinion that Whitaker is the beat man. Hamilton is not all the Waikato. Stakes of £250 a-side were paid down this morning for Kennesney to walk 112 miles within forty-eight hours. He commences on Wednesday next. . . Christchurch, Monday. The weather is very unpromising for the Agricultural Show and the races. Five days last week were very wet, and rain is falling heavily now, with no signs of clearing up. A man, name unknown, was found drowned in the River Avon yesterday. Two draught brood mares, belonging to James Walls and William Halley, each worth over £2OO, died while foaling. The Governor landed at Lyttelton shortly after ten o’clock, and was received by the Superintendent and members of the Executive. The artillery fired a salute. Heavy rain prevented any further demonstration. The Governor came through to Christchurch at once, arriving about 11.15.' The City Guards formed a guard of honor, and the cavalry an escort, The Governor was driven to the Club in Sir Cracroft Wilson’s carriage. He will reside at the Club during his visit. Lyttelton, Monday. A ■ man named Cattell, employed at the breakwater, had his leg broken to-day. ; The decision in the nautical court of inquiry was given to-day. Williams’s certificate is suspended for six months. Joynt, for the defendant, raised the question of right to suspend, as the clause in the Merchant Shipping Act had not been ■ complied with, no copy or statement of the case upon which the investigation was Ordered being furnished to the owner of the certificate before the commencement of the investigation. Westport, Monday. Mr. O’Couor, M.H.E., addressed his constituents here on Friday. There was a large and orderly attendance. He expressed his intention to again stand forthe Buller district. No local opposition probable. ■ Nelson, Monday. John Sharpe, late Resident Magistrate, announces himself as a candidate for the city. Curtis will also stand, but no other names are mentioned authoritatively, though Vogel arid Luckie are spoken of.
