To say that the shipping trade of the Port of Wellington is extensive would not be saying anything novel or calculated to surprise the public ; but there are occasions when this fact is made to appear more than usually prominent to those whose business is connected with the shipping Interest—such an occasion was Saturday, when no leas than ten vessels left this port between morning and night. These were sailing vessels and steamers bound for costal ports and Australia. The barque Union, Captain Sherlock, left Newcastle at noon on the 30th. Had light winds from S. E. to the Ist, when the wind hauled to the N.E., with heavy thunder and lightning, veering round to N.W., and backing again to B.W. and S., blowing a gale all the time. Sighted Cape Farewell at noon on Saturday, and arrived here yesterday at noon. She sighted no vessels on the passage, and brings 520 tons coal to Older. The barque Emily McLaren, Captain Morrison, arrived here on the 6th from Newcastle, having left that port on the 29th ult. Had light S. and S.S.E. winds for the first two days, and since then had W. winds, with very low glass: the lowest being 28fH) on Wednesday last. Sighted Stephens Island on Friday, and arrived as above. Passed the barque William Ackers in lat -38 deg. Smln., long. 170 deg., hovc-to. The cargo consists of 630 tons of coal, consigned to W. R. Williams. The 8.8. Stormbird, Captain Dolle, left Wellington on Wednesday, 3rd instant, at 8 p.m., heavy rain falling at the time and a light N.W. wind. When rounding Cape Terawlttt, at 11 o’clock same night, had a strong gale from the N.W, with very heavy sea. At 4 p.m. on the 4th was compelled to run for shelter under Kapiti, and brought up at 8.30 under the south end of the island. During the day the schooners Canterbury and Ocean Bird were obliged to seek shelter. On Friday the sth, at 5.30 p.m., got under way, but there was such a heavy sea and the vessel labored so much, that she returned to her anchorage. Spoke the barquentine Falcon, from Hobarton to Wanganui, running for shelter. Captain Bendall wished to be reported, as did also Captain Bullen, of the Oceanßird, U days out from Lyttelton. The following ships werclyingunder Kapiti:—Napier, as for Foxton, Neptune, brig, for Newcastle. Fal con, barquentine, for Newcastle, Ocean Bird and Canterbury, schooners; for Wanganui. Jano Hannah, and five, schooners, names unknown. The Stormbird left Wangannl on Sunday morning, at 3 40 ■ crossed the bar at 4.16 a.m., and arrived alongide the wharf at 3.16 p.m. yesterday The p.s. Lnna, Captain Fairchild,- left the wharf at half-past 12 o’clock yesterday for Lyttelton, via Kalkonra, with hla Excellency the Governor and suite os board.

The ship Chile, from Nelson, (to load at this port) made her number yesterday, and from Laptam Griffiths, of the s.s. Rangatira, we learn she has anchored some distance outside the Heads. The s.s. Wellington left the wharf at 11.40. p.m. on Saturday with the San Francisco mails transhipped from the s.s. Taranaki. : It is impossible to speak too hiehlv of the smartness and zeal displayed .on the part of the N.Z.S.S. Company in transhipping the mails, passengers, and luggage on occasion. The s.s. Rangatira, Captain Griffiths, arrived from her usual East Coast trip at eight o’clock last night. She left Napier at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, the Cth; passed the Kidnappers and the s.s. Kiwi (at anchor; at 2,40 p.m.; Cape Turnagain at 8 p.m., and was off Castle Point at 4,40 a.m. on Sunday, the 7th; rounded Cape Palliser at 2.15 p.m ; entered the Heads at 7 p. m., and arrived as above.- Experienced from Napier to Cape Turnagain fresh southerly breeze, and from thence to Cape Palliser light S, w. wind, when she encountered a strongnor’-wester, which continued till arrival She has 30 bales of wool as cargo, for Messrs. Johnston and Co.

The p.s. Manawatu; • Captain Evans, arrived in harbor yesterday morning at 6.30, having left Wanganui at 3.30 p.m. of the 6th ; crossed the bar at 4 p.ni., and arrived as above. She left Auckland on the 3rd at 9 a.m, arriving at Napier at 8 a.m/of the sth; left again on the Cth, at 11 a.m., and arrived alongside the wharf at 5 p.m. yesterday. Hawea, Captain Wheeler, left the wharf at 5 p. m. yesterday for Northern Ports with a large number of passengers, including Sir George Grey and several of the Northern members.

The s.s. Taranaki, Captain Lloyd, left the Manukau with the inward San Francisco mail on the 4th at 12.20 p.m., and arrived at Taranaki at 6 a.m. on the sth; landed mails and passengers, but was obliged to carry on the cargo, it blowing very hard fromN.W., with heavy sea. Left again at 8 a.m. .for Nelson; experienced a strong N.W. gale with heavy sea, arriving at Nelson at 2.30 a.m. of the 6th. Left Nelson at 8.40, and reached Picton at 5 p.m., remaining there 20 minutes, and made fast alongside the wharf at 10.40 p.m. She leaves this day at 2 p.m. for Picton and Northern ports. Through the kindness of Pilot Holmes (who brought the barque Union in yesterday) we have been informed that tlxe ship Waikato, for Lyttelton, left the Heads on Thursday night at ten o’clock, with a fresh N. W. wind. 1 The three-masted schooner Melaiue left on Friday at 3 p.m., and the brigantine Omaha and schooners Saucy Lass and Cleopatra on Saturday morning.
