Father Hickey, who visited this colony six years ago, collecting subscriptions for churches in Ireland, is expected to be Dr. Croke’s successor in the Catholic Bishopric of Auckland. The alterations to the steamer Wellington are completed. They cost about £6OOO. The vessel is expected to attain a speed of twelve knots. She is finished in a very superior style. Kirby has been committed for trial on a charge of indecent assault. New Plymouth, Thursday. A public meeting was held last night to urge on the Government the necessity of constructing a line of railway to Inglewood at once. The Deputy-Superintendent was in the chair. He said he had received intimation that the reason tenders had not been called for was because information was wanted from Taranaki. But on inquiry he found that all particulars had been sent to the Government in Wellington a month since. Resolutions were passed expressing the disappointment felt by the people at tenders for the Inglewood line not being called for at once, and urging on the Government the necessity there was for the speedy construction of the railway. The resolutions were directed to he forwarded to the Taranaki members at once,. The Native Lands Court is now sitting. Nelson, Thursday. The chief officer of the Chile, who was charged with larceny, was discharged this morning, it being proved that the jewellery be had sold was picked up by him in the hold, in the presence of two witnesses. Dunedin, Thursday. The inquiry into the loss of the Bruce commenced to-day before the Collector of Customs. A lot of evidence was given, which showed that the weather was particularly foggy. The court adjourned at five o’clock till to-morrow. The captain does not attribute the accident to his compasses.
