RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Tuesday, October 19. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M.) STEALING FROM THE PERSON.
Caroline Corbett was brought up on remand, charged, on the information of Alfred Crump, a sailor, with stealing from him a £1 note on the 17th inst.
The prosecutor appeared to be very reluctant to press the charge. The Bench said that the mother of the prisoner had stated that she had done all in her power to reform her daughter, but without effect. As there were no reformatories available for such cases as hers, the Bench ordered her to be sent to gaol for three calendar months, without hard labour, to be placed in that part of the gaol set apart for the reception of similar offenders. REFUSING DUTY. William Leahey, whose character was stated to be very good, was charged with refusing to assist in loading cargo on board the Halcione. Tire defendant had shipped as an engineer, but as he had signed articles to obey all lawful commands, the Bench explained to him that he was bound to perform such duties when he was ordered, and directed him to go back to his duty. LUNACY. Rowland O'Hara and Eliza Colse, alias McDermott, two suspected lunatics, were ordered to be sent, on the certificate of Drs. Diver and Johnston, to the Lunatic Asylum. The two adjourned cases of assault against O’Hara were withdrawn. BREACH OF THE PEACE. Sarah Harry and Amelia Bass were charged by Samuel Vaughan with using language tending to provoke a breach of the peace. It
turned out in cross-examination that the defendants had simply aggravated Vaughan in the Streets by laughing. The Bench dismissed the prisoners with a caution.
CIVIL CASES. There were nine civil cases of no particular interest.
