(per press aqenoy.) New Plymouth, Friday. _ A man named Brady fell down dead at his own door this morning. Brogdens’ ball was a great success last night. The trains of nine carriages, crowded with people, were running all day yesterday between Waitara and New Plymouth. Napier, Friday.
Thera was a good attendance at the cattle ahow at Hastings yesterday. The number of exhibits was 231, being 100 more than that of previous year. For the evening, there was a good house at the Odd Fellows’ Hall, when the local amateurs repeated the performance given on the 29th ult.
Ddnedin, Friday.
The Times this morning has a severe article on the ship Don Juan, alias Rosalia, which has recently been condemned as unseaworthy by the surveyor sent from Wellington. After reSming to a Jelegriim, which stated that the fnato arid some'BeatheU Brintencod to twelve weeks’ imprisonment, for refusing to go
to sea in her, on the evidence of Fairchild, of the Luna, who said she was perfectly seaworthy, it says : “We call upon the Government to make some- enquiry as to the circumstances under which Captain Fairchild came to make this most disgraceful error. An officer who is liable to this kind of mistake in judgment is not only unfit to be in the employ of the Government, but he is not fit to be employed by any firm with any little lingering respect left for human life. It would be only common justice if the Government were to make such tardy reparation as is possible to the poor fellows who were sent to gaol in Napier for refusing to join her last voyage. We really do not like to say what Captain Fairchild deserves.”
A special meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon. The Council unanimously agreed to accept the offer of Hankey, the proprietor, at £43,500, payable by the Corporation on 6 per cent, debentures at par, delivery of works to be given on Ist May, 1876.
A man named Gregg was committed for trial to-day, for rape on a girl named Helen Stains. She was distantly related to him.
