The statistical, tables',in 'anticipation of tHe volumeof statistics of the colony of New Zealand;.'for r.the, year 1874, have been published. JTroiu it we find that the estimated population of the colony (exclusive of Maoris) on 31st December, 1874, was 341,860, made up of 194,349 ,' males and 147,511 females.. ; The /papulation as ascertained by the census of March Ist; 1874, was 299,514, and the increase between that, time and the end of the year was estimated at 42,346. The increase by immigration wss 39,748, and by ! births 10,882,' from "which ~-\ had _'to be 1 deducted the decrease by emigration 4821, and by deaths 3463, leaving the net increase as stated. The net increase of the population of the colony for the entire year, from the Ist January to the 31st December, 1874," is estimated at 46,789, viz., 25,731 males and 21,058 females, being an increase of 15'81 per cent, on the estimated population on the '3lst December, ' 1873.' The increase of the population""" during" - the four quarters of |1874 was—first quarter, 7444; second, 10,032 ; third, 17,366 ; fourth, 11,947. The increases in the populations of the provinces during the year were— Auckland, 6340; Taranaki, 939; Wellington, 6649; Hawke's Bay, 2220; Marlborough, 424; Nelson, 1508; Westland, 460; Canterbury, 13,576; Otago, 14,669. It may be remarked that the difference in the increase during different quarters: is due to the,arrival of larger numbers of immigrants during one quarter than during another. The difference caused by excess of births over deaths remains sufficiently constant, though the statistics seem to prove under this latter head that the first quarter was the unheathliest, as the third was the. healthiest during the year.- The immigration * during the year was 43,965, the emigration 5859. The 'excess "of" immigration over emigration was greater by far in 1874 than in any of the nine preceding years, standing as it did at 38,106, as against 12,309 in 1865, against 860 in 1868, and against 8811 in 1873. Seventy-one foreigners took out letters of naturalization during the year. The volunteers numbered 5464 men, the -fire brigades, 68 officers and 571 men. The estimated total value of rateable property within boroughs in the colony was £9,362,685, and the estimated grbssl an-• hual value of the same, £866,306. The total tonnage of inward shipping, at" the several ports of the colony, was 399,296 tons, with crews, 15,924; as against a tonnage of 289,297, and crews, 12,177 in the preceding year. In this return, Dunedin heads the list with a tonnage of 98,482, and crews, 3155 ; and Wellington comes fourth with a tonnage of 54,164, and crews, 1647. The shipping outwards had a tonnage of 385,533 ; crews, 14,255. Of this Wellington had tonnage46,636jand crews, 1191. During the year 37 sailing vessels, -with a tonnage in gross of 2901 tons, and.B steamers, "with a tonnage of 498 tons, were built and registered in New Zealand! The total value of imports'was £8,121,812, and the total duties received £1,188,951 16s. 7d. The value'of imports from the United Kingdom was £5,481,036, from Victoria £1,502,992, and from. the United States £191,539. The value of imports in the preceding year-was £6,464,687. The total value 1 of exports the produce and manufacture of the colony was £5,152,143, of which wool amounted to £2,831,696 and gold to £1,505,331. >
