(PEH PHES3 AGENCY.) Auckland, Wednesday. The Pakaranga Hunt Club closed their season to-day, with very successful races. Thorpe, the rider of Minnie Athol in the Open Hurdle Race, had his ankle broken, the horse rolling on him. The Presbytery to-day discussed the question of a training school for ministers. It was resolved that a committee bo appointed to prepare a detailed plan for erecting a theological hall, to be submitted next meeting. It was also resolved that the General Assembly should raise the minimum salary of ministers to ,£260.
In the Supreme Court, a verdict of not guilty was returned in the case of forgery against tho wife of Conley, the waterman. It is stated that Brookfield, the Crown Prosecutor, has received the appointment of Resident Magistrate ; and Fenton, Chief Judge of the Native Lands Court, that of District Judge.
Grahamstown, Wednesday.
A public meeting is convened by the Mayor, and takes places this evening, to consider the Representation Bill.
Napier, Wednesday. A man named Ryan has been apprehended on a charge of uttering a forged cheque for £42, signed Douglas and Co. He presented it for payment of board and lodging. Tho landlord gave him credit for tho amount, and let him have £1 on account. The cheque was proved to bo worthless; no such firm as Douglas and Co. being known. Ryan could not be found, but tho police yesterday arrested him at Pnhi. The charge of forgery could not be sustained ; so the prisoner will bo dealt with summarily for obtaining £1 on false pretences. A handsome silver baton was presented to Major Withers last night by tho Napier Musical Society. Tho baton is of local manufacture.
The first attempt at a spelling bee mil be held here to-morrow.
CuiusTcnuiicrr, Wednesday. Castaway is scratched for all engagements at the November meeting. Tho keynote of the forthcoming General Assembly elections is already sounded. Two candidates have issued addresses for Coleridge, now represented by Bluett. One is John Jebson, a provincialist, who was beaten easily by Bluett last election ; the other is Cathcart, an abolitionist.
Dunedin, Wednesday.
At the inquest to-day on the body of Cyrus Haley the jury returned a verdict of justifiable homicide, adding a rider according their commendation of the action of tho warder, Miller, tho officer who shot deceased.
In the Supreme Court Hutchinson was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude for larceny. Kobert Hunter, a publican at Palmerston, an old settler, was found guilty of arson ; sentence was deferred. ‘
The Waikouditi Herald, a new weekly paper to supply the place of the Shag Valley Herald, which has been purchased by the Palmerston Times Company, was issued for the first time to-day. It is started to oppose the Palmerston Times.
Timabd, Wednesday.
Thomas Hughes and wife, committed for trial for forgery and uttering, is a curious case of a bank draft being delivered and paid to the wrong person at the wrong place.
