DISCOMFORTS OF A PASSENGER.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir,—ln your issue of 17th August you publish extracts from the letters of an esteemed correspondent, headed “ Discomforts of a Passenger.” Now, I must confess that on first reading this, which was on my arrival at Auckland from San Francisco, I was a good deal annoyed, and felt inclined to return the writer ray, compliments ; but having since thought over the matter calmly and quietly, I have come to the conclusion that the effusion is too vulgar and contemptible to merit more than a passing notice, and I am of opinion that there are very few who will not agree with mo. However, I have determined to let the letter go for what it is worth, merely informing you that I am well aware of the name of the gentleman(?) who penned it. Fortunately for mo, your correspondent is not the first passenger I have had in the good ship Mikado by some hundreds, neither will he, I trust, be the last : and my reputation is. I hope, too well established with my employers and the public generally, to be much injured by the blusterings through the Press of an unreasonable and self-important individual, whose opinion with reference to my ship, my officers, or myself, I value as much as I do that of the man in the moon.—l am, &c., F. Moore. K.M.S. Mikado, Sydney, Sept. 25.
