BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The first meeting of the new Board was held yesterday, in the offices of the Board. There were present Messrs, Pharazyn, Bunny, Andrew, Beetham, Boss, Watt, Gisborne, and Fleetwood. Mr. Toomath was absent, being engaged on the Grand Jury. Sir. Pharazyn was elected Chairman, on the motion of Mr. Bunny, seconded by Mr, Watt. The Secretary, Mr, Graham, read a statement of assets and liability up to August last, and giving the estimated expenditure and receipts up to March next. Mr. Bunny proposed that a finance committee should be appointed to inquire into the above and other matters, which would in that way receive ample attention, without prolonging the ordinary sittings of the Board in the consideration of matters of detail. Mr. Andrew seconded the motion. A committeo was then appointed, to hold office for the year, and to consist of the following members : —The Chairman, and Messrs. Gisborne, Beetham, Watt, and the mover (Mr. Bunny.) The rates for the Masterton and Featherston districts were confirmed, the time having expired within which notices of appeal should have been forwarded to the Board. The correspondence relative to the subject, which has previously been before the public, was referred to the finance committee. EDUCATION RESERVES. With regard to the disposition of timber reserves at Palmerston, it was decided to empower Mr. Dalrymple to act for the Board.— An application was received from Mr. Lifferton, of Wanganui, for a lease of certain sections belonging to the Board. It appeared that the sections were covered with loose sand, and were practically useless at present, and Mr. Lifferton offered to fence, and trusted to reclaim them. The Secretary was directed to offer a lease of fourteen years at £1 a year, TOIIEWA. The application for a school at Porewa was referred to the Inspector. MASTERTON. Complaints having been made of the conduct of Mr. Peterson, assistant-teacher, the Inspector was directed to report thereon. WAITOTAKA. The tender of Mr. Jago—£l9l 10s.—for the erection of a school at Waitotara, was accepted. BRUNSWICK. An offer was received of a site for a school at Brunswick. Referred to the Inspector to report. CASTLE POINT. It was decided to erect a schoolliouso, to be composed of iron and white pine. LOWER HUTT. With respect to a sohoolhouse for the Lower Hutt, the Secretary was directed to write to tho effect that if the committee provided a suitable site, the Board would take the erection of a building into its favorable consideration. LOCAL COMMITTEES. Some discussion took place as to the appointment of local committees ; but the Board adjourned without coming to a conclusion on tho matter, and it was decided to meet again at eleven o’clock this day. Tho finance committee arranged to meet at three o’clock that afternoon, ■ The Board then adjourned.
