Captain Johnson, mate of the Magellan Cloud, fell down stairs, and sustained injuries from which he is not expected to recover.
The Masonic installation of Brother William McCullough, as Deputy-Provincial Grand Master of New Zealand, under the Scottish constitution, last night, was the occasion of the largest gathering of Masons for years. It is proposed to erect a new theatre for Auckland at the corner of Victoria and Queenstreets.
Reefton, Wednesday.
Stone of surpassing richness was struck in the Murray Creek, in the Golden Treasui'e mine. An average specimen, lib. in weight, gave 25dwts. of gold. There is great inquiry for shares, but none are obtainable. There is a demand for Herald and Eaglehawk, adjoining leases. All interests in the Murray Creek are rapidly advancing. Dunedist, Wednesday.
In the football match Otago won, the scores being—Otago, seven points ; Auckland, half a point. Play commenced at three, and continued till five. Ends wero changed four times, but the ball was always kept near the Auckland goal, and very rarely past the centre of ground. No goals wero kicked. Auckland played well, but from the first half hour it was easily seen they wero overweighted. Macfarlane, for the northerners, worked hard, but the Otago men had it all their own way. The game was played in a most friendly manner, there being no disputes and thebestof good-fellowship being observed throughout. Tho half point for Auckland wns a touchdown at the commencement of the game. Over 3,000 persons were present. At the conclusion tho spectators gave three hearty cheers for the visitors. Tho weather held up fine throughout. In the football match the correct Otago score should be nine and a half points instead of seven ; Auckland, half a point. A dinner is to be given to the visitors to-night. An inquiry was held to-dayi-e tho grounding of the Taupo on the Pish Reef. The decision was reserved. The captain said his compasses must have deviated considerably. The Church of England Synod is now sitting. The Bishop's address last night was very able and lengthy. There are twenty-one competitors in tho chess tournament, which commences to-night. A spelling-beo is announced by the cricket club, on behalf of its funds. It comes off next week, on a grand scale. liYTTELTON, Wednesday.
At tho Lyttelton regatta meeting held last night, it was resolved that a regatta be held. An influential committee was appointed to carry out tho details.
