RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Monday, September 20. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M.) THE BMTISII TAR OF THE PEMOD. Edward Quincuard, Robert Roberts, and George Smith were charged with committing a breach of the Merchant Shipping Act by being drank and using threatening language on board the Halcione. They were each convicted and fined 10s., or forty-eight hours imprisonment. George Smith and Edward Quincuard were also charged with having violently assaulted one William Casey, a fireman on board the Easby. The evidence went to show that the assault had been of a most aggravated character. The complainant was going ou board the ship with the boatswain, and was descending the ladder, when defendants ordered him off the ship. He replied good-naturedly that he would go, and ! as he was descending the ladder both defendants attacked him with belaying pins, beating him about the head and arms. The captain gave the men a good character, so far as their conduct when sober was concerned, but from his testimony it appeared that on tho occasion in question the prisoners, and particularly the Frenchman, had been like madmen, Quincuard having possessed himself of a crowbar, with which, however, as it fortunately happened, he did no damage. His Woi-ship inflicted a penalty of 60s. and costs, or in default fourteen days' imprisonment, with hard labor. ALLEGED THEFT.
