"DISCOMFORTSOF A PASSENGER."

TO TIIK EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —At the last moment, previous to leaving for Sydney, I have seen a copy of your paper of 17th August, in which appears a most scurrilous letter from a passenger per Mikado, professing to give an account of his experiences on board during her last voyage to San Francisco. As this letter is calculated to do me much harm personally, as well as to damage the reputation of the ship and the A.S.N. Co., I will feel obliged if you will in tho meantime announce that it is my intention to reply to it fully as soon as possible ; and I have no hesitation in saying that my version of this gentleman's complaints will appear in a very different light, and will not, or I am much mistaken, redound much to his credit. lam well aware who tho writer is, and of the cause of his indignation.—l am, &c, F. Moore, Commander of s.s. Mikado. Auckland, 10th September. P. 5.—11.30 a.m.—l regret exceedingly that I have not time to reply fully to the letter now ; but I must simply say at present that his assertions are most unjust and unkind, and I am sure that he makes me out a character that no one who knows mo will endorse. [We have simply this to say, as a personal acquaintance of Captain Moore's, that nothing could be further from our intention than to give him pain by the publication of any comments in reference to his command. Tho communication referred to by him was inserted solely in the public interest, and if any statements it contains are either exaggerated or capable of disproof, wo shall regret its publication. Meanwhile, we can only say that we shall willingly publish Captain Moore's promised letter of explanation. Tho travelling public are greatly interested in this matter, and we are satisfied they will accept Captain Moore's explanation as conclusive.—!Sr>. N.Z.T.] ________________
