It will he seen by a special telegram in another column that on the 28th August Sir Julius "Vogel had quitted Germany and was in Paris. Ho wa3* doubtless then on his way to London, which place he was to leave by the September mail. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the City Council will be held this afternoon at four o’clock.

We are indebted to the courtesy of Mr. Lemon, general manager of the New Zealand Telegraph Department, for a copy of the following telegram received by him yesterday from the superintendent of Victorian telegraph lines, dated Melbourne, September 8“ The English cable has been interrupted between Batavia and Singapore for more than a week. Our latest date from London is August 31, and we are hourly expecting news of repairs to the cable having been effected.” We leam that the National Bank of New Zealand (Limited) have received telegraphic advices from Loudon that a dividend at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum was declared at the annual meeting of shareholders, held on the 19th August last. It will be seen from an advertisement in another column that the dividend will be payable on and after Monday next.

The quarterly licensing meeting for the Hntt district was held yesterday, at the Mechanics’ Institute, Hutt, before J. C. Crawford, Esq., chairman. A notice had been given by Inspector Atchison, to the commissioners, that he would apply for the cancellation of the license held by Anno Collins, of the Mungaroa Hotel, on the ground of the hotel being improperly conducted. In consequence of there being no quorum of the commissioners, the meeting was adjourned for a fortnight. Mr. Robert Hart, solicitor, appeared on behalf of Anne Collins.

A telegram was received from Picton yesterday, dated 4.50 p.m., from Captain Kennedy, of the Easby, stating that that steamer had put in there from stress of weather iu the Strait, and would leave again for Wellington immediately the weather moderated. The Easby is from Sydney, as our readers are aware, and brings, according to the telegram, 312 tons of general cargo for this port. We are indebted to Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co. for the above information.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M., Henry Kent and Thomas Fribble, drunken incapables, were fined ss. each, or in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Fribble had £42 10a. on him when the police took him iu charge the previous evening, thereby saving him from being plundered by a couple of loafers who were dogging his steps. George Wood, a recent arrival from Napier, was charged with vagrancy and drunkenness, and remanded till Saturday. There were no civil cases. The Wellington Choral Society will give the first concert of their thirteenth season this evening, at the Odd Fellows' Hall. Lovers of classical music will be pleased to learn that the programme will include Mozart’s Twelfth Mass, which will be rendered with full orchestral accompaniments. The chorus will consist of fifty voices, and the baud of twenty-two instruments, under the leadership of Sir. Mowbray. The second part will include a choice variety of choruses and solos, followed by orchestral selections by the band. The following gentlemen have been chosen as the Wellington team to play against the Auckland men in the forthcoming football match Messrs. Werry (captain), Bishop, Barne, G. Campbell, A. Campbell, Knapp, James, Hickson, Park, Riddifoid, Palliser, Sheppard, Stohr, Snodgrass, and Webb. We leam with regret that Mrs. Darrell, so highly esteemed here not only as an actress but as a lady, is so unwell in Dunedin that it is highly improbable that she will be able to appear at the Theatre Royal, Wellington, as was contemplated on the 25 th inst. The inhabitants of Palmerston contemplate getting up a memorial, by way of a reminder, to ask the provincial authorities to proceed at once with the erection of the bridge across the Manawatu River, below the township. The Advocate says that they begin to think the Government have forgotten that they placed a respectable sum on the Estimates last session for this bridge, which, if constructed, would give an impetus to the district, as it would connect a valuable tract of land, which at present is “ No man’s land,” being entirely without population. The Chronicle says that the condition of the Tnrakina bridge is becoming a serious matter. Teams cross daily, the drivers of which are in utter ignorance of the fact that at the Turakina end the beams rest upon about two feet of the undermined and dangerously treacherous soil. We may expect at any moment to hear of a terrible catastrophe occurring there.

Mr. James Smith requests us to call attention to his important clearing out auction sale this day, at his temporary mart, Parish-street. The sale commences at 2 o’clock, and all goods must be cleared by 4 o’clock next day.
