RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Monday, September 13. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., E.M.) DRUNKENNESS. David Cockle, Dawson Harris, Pedro TJsurpa, Richard Jones, 'William Leajihy, Michael Taylor, Andrew Price, Frederick Hozledou, and Salvator Lorimer were each convicted of drunkenness, some of having been disorderly, and were punished after their deserts. EOBM-BY Charles Scott was charged with having stolen £2l 10s., the property of John Bah!, on Thursday, the 9th inst. John Bahl deposed that he remembered the prisoner. Deft his room in the _ Pier Hotel in the morning, and returned in the evening of that day. In the room he left a purse containing £2l 10s. The money consisted of one £lO note, two £5 notes, 20s. in silver, and a half-sovereign. The number of the £lO note was 03022(5, on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch. (Note produced, and corresponded with description given by witness.) At ten o’clock had occasion to go to his room, and there discovered that some one had been there during his absence, and had taken away the whole of the contents of the purse. James McGrath said he had met prisoner in a pie-shop in Willis-street last Thursday. A conversation arose about money, each boasting that bo could show the most money. Eventually prisoner produced a £lO-noto and asked witness to break it. Witness gave him change for it, the note produced. Witness had known prisoner for six years. By prisoner : You owed me 2a. This concluded the evidence, and the prisoner was cautioned in the usual manner. Prisoner pleaded innocence, and said he should be able to prove that he was absent from town at the time the robbery was committed. His Worship then committed prisoner to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court.

BREACH OP THE MERCHANT SHIPPING ACT. George Selburg and John Kennedy were charged with unlawfully disobeying the commands of their master on the ship Jane Spiel's, The captain having signified his unwillingness to press the charge, the men agreed to give their labor in payment for what they had cost the captain in taking the present proceedings. Prisoners were accordingly discharged.
