Auckland, Friday.
A requisition from the Suburban Highway Board to the chairman, asking him to call an open air meeting to express sympathy for Sir George Grey and party, is being prepared. Captain Moore, of the Mikado, is incensed at a letter in the New Zealand Times describing the discomforts of passengers. He intends writing to the Times with a view of showing the other side. (PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Friday. The Southern mails were despatched with great prompitude. As soon as the Taranaki was signalled the little steamer Tam o’ Shanter was chartered and went down with the mails, and met the Taranaki at Manukau Bluff. The Taranaki immediately transferred her passengers and cargo, and steamed away at noon. At a poultry and dog show to-day there were good exhibits. Inspector Thomson, A. 0., who with Major Keddell conducted the Ohinemuri miners’ rights enquiry, is a passenger to Wellington, summoned to give evidence before the select committee of the House. The Mikado sailed at noon to-day. G-rahamstown, Friday. Gibbons, Butt, and Wilson have been elected to the Borough Council. The two latter are old members. Gibbons, in returning thanks, said his election was due to the stand he had taken in favor of the Abolition Bill. Napier, Friday. A special meeting of the municipality is convened for" to-morrow,, to take into consideration the Swamp . Nuisance Bill as amended by the Legislative Council. Probably the amendment will be agreed to. The new Forester’ Lodge started at Havelock is to be called the Court in Henry, Havelock. Another lodge is also being started in Napier in addition to the present one. The order is progressing much in the province. Christchurch, Friday. At the City Council election yesterday W. D. Wood, merchant, C. W. Turner, merchant, and Thompson, jeweller, were elected. This is highly satisfactory, as it will have the effect of raising the tone of the Council. They are all new men. Mr. B. Hart, one of the retiring Councillors, and an ex-Mayor, was fourth on the list.
Hugh McMasters, of Wairarapa, Wellington, has purchased the whole of Messrs. Hay Brothers’ stock of long-woolled sheep. Dunedin, Friday.
In a letter in the Times to-day j. S. Webb defends the Hon. Mr. Reynolds from the attacks of that paper and others. He publishes extracts from a letter from Mr. Reynolds, in which the Commissioner of Customs states that ho has no intention of going into the Upper House ; that when the elections are over he shall retire from the Government, but he does not promise not to seek re-election. Inveroaugiix, Friday.
In tho arson case McGlashan was brought up at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when the evidence taken before the coroner’s jury was read over, and additional evidence was tendered by the police. Sergeant Furdy deposed that on conveying the prisoner from the inquiry to the gaol he said “ One thing, I can sleep easy, I did not set fire to it intentionally. X saw to-day that my statement to you boys was the worst against me, I knew if I was committed by it I could get off by the jury. I wouldn’t care so much about it only for the look of tho thing.” The magistrate said on the additional evidence he felt it was his duty to commit tho prisoner for trial. The prisoner, who had nothing to say, was committed. Bail was accepted; the prisoner in £2OO, and two sureties in £IOO each.
