We understand that it is not improbable that Mr. T. L. Travers will offer himself a candidate for the Wellington Country District, at the next general election for members of the House of Representatives, Mr. Brandon, it is said, does not intend again to come forward. Messrs. E. T. Gillon and J. H. Wallace will contest the seat with Mr. Travers. The first annual meeting of the Wellington Literary Association was held in St. John’s schoolroom yesterday evening, for the purpose of receiving the reports of the seeretax-y and treasurer, and for the election of officers for the ensuing six months. ' The Rev. Mr, Paterson occupied the chair. The Secretary read his report, showing that at the first meeting of the society a year since, forty-one members were enrolled, while at the present time there were sixty-five members, and with every px-oa-pect of the number increasing. Through the kindness of the committee of St. John’s Church the society had been allowed the free use of the schoolroom and lighting. It was intended as some return for this kindness to give an entertainment, the proceeds of which would be handed over to the church. An entertainment had been given during the past year in aid of the library fund which had been highly satisfactory, for after paying all expenses there remained a net balance of £B. The report concluded .vith regrets that some of the members had not been so regular in their attendance as could have been desired. The treasurer’s report showed a netcredit balance of £21175. 9d, The following officer-bearers for the ensuing six months were elected : President —T. Kennedy Macdonald. Vice-Presidents Messrs. We notice that the first general practice of the Wellington Eire Brigade since the commencement of its new year will be held tonight. The service is to be illustrative of Banyan’s Holy War, a work eminently capable of being adapted to a purpose of this k)nd. For some weeks past the church choir and other friends, with the senior scholars, in all about 150, have been preparing for this festival. Mr. 0. Godber is the leader, and Mr. Biliman will preside at the organ, so that a very efficient rendering of the pieces may be anticipated. A collection will bo made during the evening in aid of tho Sunday-school funds.. The service will commence at 7 p.m. precisely, and copies of the hymns may be obtained at the doors of the church.
