Tho proprietor, Mr. Kdgecombe, is to bu entertained at dinner by tho townspeople and Bottlers. llokitika, Saturday. Tho manager of tho Freight Company has written to tho Borough Council intimating that tho company had resolved on towing vessels in ballast, for this port, free of charge. The Council decided that all tug-boats belonging to tho port, whon towing in vessels in ballast, will bo froo of port charges. It is understood that tho sawmill proprietors have agreed to subsidise tho Tug Company by £IOOO per annum, for tho towage of vessels with ballast inwards and timber outwards. The Supreme Court sittings commence on Monday. Dcnedin, Sunday. A fire occurred last night at tho Phoenix warehouse in Stafford and Hope-streets. Esther and Low occupied one portion, and Henderson and Law the other. The premises in front were totally destroyed, and in tho rear partially. The insurances are as follows : —Esther, valuo of stock destroyed, £2OOO ; insured for £ISOO, viz., Eoyal, £750 ; Liverpool, London, and Globe, £750. Henderson and Law's loss is not computed at present; nor tho amount of their insurances. The wholo loss can bo estimated at £IOOO. The origin is supposed to bo from lighted ashes in a wooden box at the rear of tho building. PUBLIC OPINION. Gisuoknb, Saturday. The following telegram from Gisborne has been received :—An influential meeting was held to obtain an expression of opinion regarding the abolition measures. The meeting was unanimous in its favor. The following resolution was passed :—That this meeting cordially approves of tho Abolition of Provinces Bill and Local Government Bill brought forward by Government, and; would strongly urge that both measures bo carried through their final stages during tho present session.
