CITY COUNCIL.
Thursday, September 2. The Council met at 4 p.m. Present :—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Gillon, Greenfield, Oleland, Pharazyn, Eainie, Moss, Mills, Dransfield, and George. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read from warders of gaol, asking for a lamp to be placed at the junction of Ingestre-street and Woodcombe-street.—From Mi-. James Dunn, complaining of a limekiln being erected by Messrs. HUI, in Wallacestreet.—Prom Mr. G. Crawford re nuisance in Ingestre-street. In respect of the letter of Mr. Hill, it was decided to take the opinion of the City Solicitor as to whether the Council had power to interfere. The other matters were referred to committee. TENDERS FOR TUNNELLING AT WATERWORKS. Ten tenders were received for this work. The highest was £8 ss. per lineal yard, and the lowest—that of Mr. Goodman —£219 a. fid. per lineal yard. The latter was accepted. RETURNING OFFICERS. The following gentlemen were appointed returning officers at the forthcoming elections:— Te Aro—Mr. J. R. George ; Hamilton—Sir. Dransfield ; Thorndon—Mr. Clelaud. WHARF COMMITTEES' REPORT. The following report was adopted : “ 1. With reference to the memorial from the Chamber of Commerce re further wharf accommodation, the committee recommend that the Chamber of Commerce be informed that the Council are fully aware of the importance of providing further wharf accommodation, but until the Bill now before the General Assembly is passed, the Council have not the power to carry out the wishes of the memorialists. “ 2. The consideration of the reports of the City Surveyor, Harbormaster, and Piermaster, re utilising Custom-house Quay for small craft, are postponed for same reason.” SANITARY COMMITTEES REPORT. The following report was adopted : “ 1. Your committee beg to report that they have appointed Mr. Pilmer to be the officer under Mr. Saunder’s contract, to see the conditions fulfilled ; that they have instructed him to withdraw the advertisement re complaints against the contractor, and for the future not to insert any advertisements without special authority. All complaints of default by the contractor to bo sent in to the Town Clerk. “2. The committee further advise with regard to the burying oi nightsoil, that in case it becomes a nusiance, the Inspector take proceedings against the offending party.” PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The following report was adopted : “ With regai-d to the formation of Hainingstreet by the residents, the committee advise that the time allowed for doing so be one fortnight, and the City Solicitor give notice accordingly. “On an application from Mr. L. Levy, respecting the bad state of Courtenay Place and Marjoribauk-street, the committee recommend that the Surveyor attend to it as soon as possible. “ The committee suggest that endeavors should be made to purchase from the Gas Company portiou of acre N0.'220, for the purpose of continuing Tory-street through to the proposed Te Aro reclamation. “ The committee recommend that a further sum, not exceeding £2O, be voted for repairs to road through Town Belt to Evans Bay. “On an application from Mr. Walker, the committee advise that the City Surveyor attend to the street on the west side of the cricket ground so soon as the weather admits. “On a further letter from Mr. R. B. Gore, respecting the state of Aurora-terrace, and offering to see that certain repairs are done if the Council will grant him the £lO already voted for that purpose, the committee recommend that his request be granted, the work to be done under the supervision of the City Surveyor.
“On an application from Mr. E. Brandon, respecting the footpath in Boulcott-street, the committee advise that the Survey or attend to it as soon as possible. " - “The committee also recommend that the City Surveyor attend to the following matters : —The kerbing at the corner of the Central Hotel, Featherston-street; the repairing Clyde-quay-road ; the repairing upper end of Tara-naki-street; to call for tenders for horseing watercarts.” FINANCE. The wages and salary list was passed. A3IOMALY IN THE ELECTION LAW. Councillor GILLON called the attention of the Council to the fact that it had been the practice hitherto to disallow any votes to a ■ burgess holding several properties, unless he had paid rates upon all Thus, if he had paid rates upon one property only, he was not allowed a vote for the rates he had paid. The matter was referred to the Solicitor. - NOTICES OF MOTION. Councillor Gili.on to move, that the Lighting Committee be discharged, and its duties handed over to the Public Works Committee. Councillor George to move, that the name of Councillor Moss be substituted for that of Councillor Cleland on the Public Works Com- ■ mittee. The Council then adjourned.
