The Hawkeshury Handicap was won by Calumny; Ladybird, 2 ; Kingfisher, 3s. London, August 23. The Turkish Porte has accepted the proposals of the representatives of> Russia, Austria, and Germany, to send foreign Consuls to advise the insurgents of Bosnia and Herzegovina to lay down their arms and submit their case to Servia. August 24. England, France, Italy, Russia, Germany, and Austria have collectively made proposals to the Porte with regard to the insurrection in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The proposals were telegraphed yesterday. Turkey is concentrating a large force near Missa. In consequence of her attitude, a hundred thousand of the Servian militia have been called out. The steamer Brisbane left Singapore for Brisbane on Saturday, three days earlier than her contract time. She has 370 Chinese passengers for Cooktown. Garibaldi has requested Menotti to open subscriptions for the Herzegovingians. AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. Sydney, August 29. Since the departure of the Hero, little of interest has arisen. The senior officer of the naval station has received a telegram from the Admiralty, stating that the Queen desired to express her sympathy with Mrs. Goodenough. The Hawkeshury Handicap was a wonderfully fast race. Star, and King of the West had the lead at the straight, and were forced to keep the pace until the Star was compelled to retire. Ladybird took second place, with Kingfisher close on her girths. King of the West was first to land in the straight, but Ladybird and Kingfisher were hard upon him, and Calumny and Goldsboro were coming up fast, and Benjiroo and Sweetbriar began to improve their positions. The two first-men-tioned were on terms at the distance, when King of the West came up against Ladybird, and for a moment Kingfisher looked like winning, but Calumny, creeping against the rails, caught them ten lengths from home, and won a wonderfully fast race by about a length. Ladybird beat Kingfisher by a head for second, and the same distance separated Kingfisher from King of the West ; Sweetbriar was two or three lengths away, and then followed Goldsboro, Benjiroo, and the Star. Time, 3min. 35sec. Melbourne, August 29. Two thousand pounds, in two bundles of notes, were lost by two exchange clerks of the Bank of Victoria whilst proceeding to deliver them to other banks. The vote for a railway from Maryborough to Gympie, was withdrawn. The Assembly passed a resolution offering a subsidy not in excess of £15,000 to a steam company to trade in Queensland waters, to include five steamers of 400 tons register, one of 122 tons, and two river steamers, with a guaranteed minimum speed of eight knots. The Government have resolved to make a new road to Edward’s camp, on the Upper Palmer, for which Parliament has voted £2OOO.

Adelaide, August 20. The rifle match between the Scotch and English, was won by the latter. The South Australian Rifle Association have accepted a challenge for a match with the Sydney Small Bore Rifle Association. Newcastle Shipping. —Arrived : Star of the Mersey and Neptune, from Wellington. Sailed : Australind, for Wellington, with 740 tons of coal.
