BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday, at the Board's offices. Present—Messrs. Pharazyn (in the chair), Bunny, Toomath, and Lowes. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. FINANCE. The bank account was stated to be overdrawn £2226 135., but that a payment of £2768 Ms. 9d. would be made by the Provincial Government in the course of a day or two, to cover advances made in building account. Sundry accounts, as per Finance Committee's report, as well as the visual monthly salaries, were ordered to be paid, CORRESPONDENCE. An application from the settlers at Porirua for a new school was ordered to stand over until a statement of the liabilities of the Board on account of buildings already authorised was laid before the Board. In answer to an application from the Greytown settlers, asking that the Board would waive their claim to section 38, Moroa, to be used as a cemetery and public park for Greytown, the said section being an educational reserve, the Secretary was instructed to inform the petitioners that they had not tho power to do so without an Act either of the Provincial Council or the Assembly. The local committee having written asking the Board to accept of a tender for £271 for the erection of a teacher's residence at Wairoa,

the original tenderer at £240 having refused to sign the contract, it was decided that the original amount voted be adhered to—the additional cost, if ultimately necessary, being defrayed by the people themselves. Mr. Higginson having written complaining of the proximity of the urinals and closets at the Hill-street school to his property, the Secretai'y was instructed to inform him that the said urinals, &c, had been removed to their present situation, at considerable expense and after due consideration, only some six months ago, previous to the erection of Mr. Higginson's house ; but if Mr. Higginson could point out a more suitable position, and choose to affect the removal at his own expense, the Board would raise no objection. The Secretary was requested to apply to the Commissioner of Public Works, and ascertain if he would be willing to supply sixty of the new colored maps of the North and South Islands recently issued by that department for the use of the Board's schools. Mrs. Gibson having written, giving the Board notice to quit the Kaikokopa school x'ented from her, it was decided to accept the three months' notice, and to effect sundry repairs asked for, and that the question of the erection of a new school be left for the new Board to decide upon. The local committee of Foxton school having written asking that the Board would remit the sum of £SO which the settlers had agreed to raise, and also sanction the payment of £25 over and above the original contract, it was resolved that the Board adhere to the amount already voted. Mr. Wilkinson's request for an advance of £lO was agreed to. The seal of the Board was authorised to be affixed to the lease of the school site at Makara, and also to Mr. Titzherbert's appointment as solicitor to the Board at Wanganui. TENDER. A tender for the erection of a chimney to the school-house at Denlear for the sum of £l3 Bs. was accepted. REPORT. Mr. Thynn's report on the prices of timber to be cut in the Board's reserves at Palmerston, on the system of tithes, was taken into consideration, and was formally agreed to be relegated for the new Board to decide upon, the Secretary being instructed in the meanwhile to ascertain from Mr. Lenton whether he could not obtain an offer for the whole of the timber on section 411 to be removed within a certain time. Also, that the subject of the duration of the lease be relegated to the new Board. A Bimilar conclusion was arrived at in the case of an application from Mr. Liffiton, for the lease of certain sections at Wanganui for twenty-one years at a peppercorn rent, the said reserves being stated to be merely drift sand. ASSISTANT TEACHERS. The Inspector brought under the notice of the Board the cases of Mr. England and Miss Devereux, who were entitled by their certificates to a considerable increase of salary, but were at present only in the position of assistants. In the present cases it was agreed the full salaries according to their certificates be allowed, but that in future the principle be laid down that such salaries should only be allowed when they were promoted to the full charge of schools, or to such positions under the Board as would be compatible with their certificates. NEW APPOINTMENTS. On the recommendation of the Inspector, the following appointments were confirmed : —Mr. Hamilton, supernumary to Te Aro School; Miss Stevens, mistress to Johnsonville. The Board then adjourned.
