(from our own correspondents). Auckland, Tuesday. The famous Caledonian Company held their annual meeting to-day. The directors reported unsuccessful prospecting, although 783 tons stone had been crushed, yielding 10-10 ozs. of gold, and this was added to by a call of 15s. The year’s operations showed a deficit of 235. It was stated at the meeting, in the re-election of Thornes Russell to’ the board of directors, that he would soon be back again. Sheehan has telegraphed that he has collected £3O in Wellington towards the football tour, and expects £lO more. Three hundred more signatures were appended to the petition calling on the Auckland representatives to resist the Abolition Bill word by word. The petition is placed on a stand in Queen-street to-night for signature. Another batch will be sent down by the Ladybird on Thursday. Dunedin, Tuesday. Mr. Black, the District Engineer, accompanied by Mr. M. Reed, Secretary for Works, and Mr. Conyers, general manager, went in a special train to-day the whole distance to Balclutha. They thoroughly inspected the line, and it was finally passed by the engineer. The manager placed stationmasters, and everything is ready for to-morrow, when a special train with excursionists runs. Great preparations are being made by the Tokomairiro and Balclutha people. Davies, the ventriloquist, had a crowded house last evening. His season promises to be a most successful one. The meeting rc abolition is now being held, and is likely to be exceedingly lively. The weather to-day and yesterday was magnificent and like summer. (per fresh, agency,) Auckland, Tuesday. U A steward from Sydney to-day was fined £25 for transferring ’ 120 packets cards to the steward of. the Hauraki without paying the 6d. and duty. The steward of the Hauraki was fined an equal amount for receiving them. Grahamstown, Tuesday. Robinson, who was asked to captain the Auckland Football team in their trip South, declines to go. Paul, another Thames man, also declines. Robinson was captain of the Auckland crickters. Six candidates are nominated for the three vacant seats in the Borough Council. New Plymouth, Tuesday. The s.s. Hawea arrived this morning from Manukau. The captain reports that a passenger named Davies, for. Nelson or Wellington, jumped overboard during the passage down. Boats were lowered, and all means taken for his recovery, but without avail. He had two children with him on board. It is thought that he was in difficulties. Dunedin, Tuesday. Great preparations are being made for celebrating the opening of the Clutha line. A luncheon has been ordered at Clutha for four hundred people. The members of the City Council and also of Milton Town Council will be present. It is expected to be a grand affair. The District Engineers made a flying trip over the line to-day. The weather for the last two days has been hot.
