WELLINGTON CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY (LIMITED.)
The twelfth half-yearly meeting of the Wellington Co operative Society (Limited) was held in the sideroom of the Odd Fellows" Hall on Thursday, August 19th. There was a large attendance of members, Mr. M. Read in the chair. The minutes of the last half-yearly meeting were read and confirmed, and the names of a considerable number of persons who wished to become members of the society were submitted to the meeting and approved, after which the chairman read the usual half-yearly report and balance-sheet. ' In the former the committee again congratulated the members ou the continued success of the society, the amount of cash taken in the store during the past six months (£3768 Bs. 2d.) having exceeded that of any former period. The report also informed members that the committee were again in a position to recommend the payment of a dividend of one shilling aud sixpence in the pound on all purchases made by members during the half-year ending 15th June last and also the payment of an increased dividend of 8 per cent, per annum on shares, instead of 6 per cent, per annum as formerly. It also
urged upon the members the desirability of securing a piece of land on which to erect business premises of their own, the amount now being paid for rent and occasional repairs being sufficient to pay a fair interest on the v money required for the purpose. The report and balance-sheet were unanimously approved and adopted. The meeting then proceeded to elect three members in room of Messrs. M. Bead, C. Gamble, ana G. Tattle, who retired in accordance with the rules. The two first-named gentlemen having served the society since its formation, six years ago, were not in a position to offer themselves for re-election, as the affairs of the society now required a far greater amount of time and attention than they now had at their dispssaL Messrs. E. Toomatb. andßevell were elected in their stead, and Mr. G. Tattle, being eligible, was re-elected. Mr. Jonas Woodward was re-elected as treasurer ; Mr. W. G. Kirk as secretary; and Messrs. Can-oil and Cherrett auditors for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks was then given to the committee, the treasurer, secretary, and retiring officers, and the meeting separated, M being evidently well pleased with the continued success of the co-operative movement.
