THE ABOLITION QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES, Sir, —Auckland is a peculiar province, and the Aucklanders are a peculiar people. When they could have made the waste lands of both islands Crown lands of the colony they preferred £45,000 of filthy lucre. Now they want a common land fund. They elect a Superintendent who says he objects to the abolition of provinces ; but if the people were in favor of it, he expressed his willingness to conform to it. Are the majority of the people in his province favorable to abolition or not? In the city of Auckland we hear of meetings of constituents who agree with the abolition question, but wish to appeal to the people. This is Sir George Grey’s stronghold, and when such is the sentiment expressed there, we may assume that the feeling of the outlying districts is much stronger in favor of it. Major Jackson very justly observed the other evening in the House, “that the only knowledge his district (the Waikato) had of the Provincial Government was the periodical visit of the tax collector of that department.” Whatever may be the verdict of meetings strongly packed by the employes of the provincial system and their friends, the voice of the colony has unmistakeably pronounced in favor of the abolition of the provinces. Let us have one law throughout the length and breadth of this land, and let us be a great united country, and let our motto be “ Advance New Zealand.”—l am, &c.,

An Aucklander.
