CARDINAL MANNING ON FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE.

“It is stated on good authority,” says the English Churchman, “ that Cardinal Blanning has intimated to the Homan Catholic Bishops of Germany that the opposition to the German Government has the approval of the Homan Catholic hierarchy of this country ; and we observe that in an answer to an address presented on a late occasion by the Catholic members of the House of Commons, representing Irish constituencies, this Roman Catholic Cardinal is reported to have said that ‘his belief was that if the German Empire did not retract its legislation against the freedom of conscience, it would disintegrate itself.’ In Germany, this approval of the Ultramontane clergy may count for a good deal among the laity in the way of encouragement, but Cardinal Blanning owes the position of Cardinal to his championship of Ultramontauism ; without it, he would not have occupied a higher place than Dr. Newman, who, as a theologian and controversialist, is the Cardinal’s superior. It would be amusing, but for the effect of reiteration on the public mind, to note the confidence with which Cardinal Blanning talks of freedom of conscience. The old Catholics accept Jhe doctrines of the Homan Catholic Church as these were taught to them by the Church before 1869-70 ; for this they are denounced, with Cardinal Manning’s sanction, as heretics. The Homan Catholic Bishop of Salford excommunicated Blr. Petre for the same reason. lias Cardinal Blanning never heard of Father O’Keeffe, the parish priest of Callan ? What freedom of conscience has been allowed to him, under the authority of. Cardinal Cullen • ”
