MIRACLES.

TO TnE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir.— When " A Christian " next addresses through your columns the public of Wellington, he should bear in mind that his readers are nine-tenths of them Anglo-Saxons, or as the head of his Church here the other night politely Jpufc it, apostates, and not the wretched peasants or brigands of the Basilicata or Calabria, with their bleeding nuns and winking virgins. "A Christian " says that multitudes of Jews flocked to the house to convince themselves of the "real historical fact" of the raising of Lazarus. Curious that neither SS. Mathew, Mark, nor Luke record this "real historical fact." Either they knew nothing about it or else did not think it of sufficient importance to record. —I am, &c, C. W. TO TnE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —In to-day's paper I see a letter under signature " A Christian," with reference to the pamphlet in answer to the Bishop of Wellington on the subject of " Miracles," and also to the review of that pamphlet. The letter as argument is beneath notice, but it is very noticeable indeed in another respect. The writer having nothing to say, applies himself to flinging filth at the supposed writer or writers in question. The expression is : " irreligious and immoral bachelor and his friends." Now, sir, having read the pamphlet of "Zetalethes," I do not tlnd in it anything which can be called coarse or personal; it is incisive and trenchant in its criticism, but not personal. It is characteristic, sad to say, of the theological mind when it meets with difference of opinion and objections which it camiot put down with the high hand, to take to cursing. Bell, book, and candle as of old are verv handy. The spirit is there still, but thank God the power is gone. Will these persons ask us to believe that they are animated by the Spirit of the Sermon on the Mount ? If they cannot rlticl arguments to keep them in countenance, let them not set the unchristian example of blackguard personality.—l am, &c, Planetos. August 12.
